A SHORT VISIT TO MONTEZUMA NWR
Sunday, April 20, 2014
I expected Montezuma to be similar to Iroquois and it was... lots of geese, blackbirds, and swallows and a few other birds. Every osprey nest had an osprey sitting in it - a good sign for lots of little ospreys this summer - and there was a group of terns in the pool near the visitors center. I also spotted a few coots and ring-necked ducks along the drive. One plus to the spring growth not having really started yet - hundreds of muskrat lodges were visible all over the marsh. It's incredible to think of how many of those little guys must live there.
I didn't go to Lock CS-1 but I did stop to check out the eagle nest across from the intersection of Rts 89 & 31 and spotted two eagles - one on the nest and one on a branch nearby.
Other than the eagles being harder to spot, I suspect things will be more interesting in a month or so, when there are more ducks and wading birds puttering around, and when the purple martins are back in their colony next to the visitor's center.

I REALLY HATE CHANGING BIKE TIRES & TUBES...
Saturday, April 12, 2014
When I unloaded my bike I noticed that the rear tire had worn down to the threads in a couple of spots... I knew it was time to do some maintenance, but apparently I didn't realize how urgent it was. So tonight I pulled the wheels, cleaned them, squeezed more grease onto the axle bearings - and proceeded to puncture three tubes trying to reinstall the tubes and tires. What a pain...
On the other hand, I'd have to pay $250-$350 for the Downtube to do a spring tuneup (which probably doesn't include new tubes and tires) and the bike didn't coast anywhere near that originally (though it might by now, with the various modifications I've made.) And at least I use the $5 tubes, not the expensive ones...

SAD & PATHETIC
Saturday, April 12, 2014
On my way to the bike path today I stopped at Colonie Center to drop a few things in the mail - and found myself walking almost a quarter of a mile because the mall parking lot was packed.
A gorgeous sunny April day (with temperatures more like May or June!) and people are spending their afternoon at the mall.
Sigh.
