SOMEDAY THE SNOW & ICE WILL FINALLY MELT...
13 Mile Ride on the Mohawk Hudson Bike Path, Lock 7 Rd, and Forts Ferry Rd
Wednesday, March 25, 2015
Not today... today I was still limited to the same stretch of the bike path and some short sections of roads at either end. But maybe after another week or two of warmer weather enough snow and ice will melt that I can ride some of the other sections of the path too...
Today was the first time this year I felt comfortable riding without tights... though it would have been more comfortable earlier in the day, before the cloud cover moved in. With the wind, it was a pretty chilly ride.

END OF THE LINE FOR MY ORIGINAL CANON SX110?
Friday, March 20, 2015
It looks like my 1st Canon SX110 has reached the end of its useful life. For some time now the battery door has been loose enough that it thinks the batteries are dead when they're not... and more recently, the power button had gotten a bit finicky. Now it doesn't want to power up at all...
Not that I can complain, really... this fantastic camera has lasted for six years, hundreds of thousands of photos, and more abuse than I could have reasonably expected it to survive... heat, cold, water, snow, being dropped countless times, this camera had the crap beat out of it and kept going until (I suspect) parts just plain wore out.
...which is why a couple of years ago I picked up a replacement on Ebay - I actually bought a newer model prior to our Grand Canyon trip in 2010 (in case this one died in the middle of the trip) but I don't like some of the "upgrades" Canon made. And it's why I've currently got my eye on a couple of SX110's on Ebay... this model does everything I want for a smallish camera to bring with me when I'm running or riding (or when the weather is lousy and I don't want to risk my fancier Canon) so why risk buying a replacement I might be unhappy with?

WELCOMING THE VERNAL EQUINOX WITH... SNOW?!!!
Friday, March 20, 2015
That would be the "first day of spring" for most folks... which today we're celebrating with temperatures barely creeping above freezing and snow flurries later in the day. Wahoo.
Have I mentioned that I'm really tired of cold and snow?

WELCOME BACK DUCKIES...
1 Mile Walk at Buckingham Pond
Monday, March 16, 2015
About half the path around Buckingham Pond is fairly clear... but the other half is still tough walking, between the snow and ice.
I did see the first Buckingham ducks of the season near the end of the walk... with no doubt many more to come as the ice retreats and the weather warms up.

A HINT OF SPRING
12.8 Mile Ride on the Mohawk Hudson Bike Path, Lock 7 Rd, and Forts Ferry Rd
Monday, March 16, 2015
I'm more than ready for the cold and snow to be gone... for some reason, I never really got enthused about winter this year, and I'm eager to go back to running trails and riding my bike anywhere on the bike paths instead only on two small sections that are plowed. So I almost stopped my ride short this afternoon, after one out-and-back toward Lock 7... but thankfully, there was a foot-wide section of the unplowed path that was rideable, so I was able to go all the way over to Forts Ferry Rd without having to either take River Rd or drive the bike between the two parking lots.
Hopefully in the next couple of weeks even more of the paths will clear and I can go back to having more options in places to ride!

A BRIEF TEASE OF SPRING
0.8 Mile Walk at Buckingham Pond
1.8 Mile Walk on the Mohawk Hudson Bike Path
Wednesday, March 11, 2015
Warm (well, for March) and sunny when I left work... 2nd day in a row. I had planned to get out for a run today but the legs were feeling tired, so I did some walking instead.
Since I'm trying to visit Buckingham Pond at least once a month I headed there first, figuring the path would be pretty well stomped down by now. Boy was I wrong about that. I spent about 3/4's of the loop slogging through very wet snow, including a couple of sections with a layer of cold slush under the snow. Can't say I felt any motivation to do a 2nd loop, so I called it quits and headed over to the bike path instead.
That was much easier walking, though it was getting chilly by the time I go there. But I still had a fairly pleasant walk along the Mohawk, with more than a few birds putting in appearances. The real treat was the first red-winged blackbirds that I've seen this season.
Unfortunately, this weekend it's supposed to be cold and sleeting/raining... both a reminder that spring isn't here yet and a reason to cancel my trip to RI this weekend. As much as I'd like to run the Brrr-lingame race Saturday, 10 miles in sleet or cold rain is unappealing, especially with a 6 hour round trip to get there and back - and little opportunity to visit some of my other preferred stomping grounds down that way, since it's supposed to rain all day. Maybe next year...
