RAIL TRAIL PAVING RESUMES
Wednesday, June 27, 2018
Just got word that as of last Friday, the paving of the Albany County Rail Trail has resumed, with the goal being to finish the section from Slingerlands to Voorheesville (about 3.7 mi.) This means those sections of the trail will be closed during weekdays, though the hope is that some parts can be re-opened when work isn't actually being done.
As I've said before, I have mixed feelings about this. On the one hand, the paved surface will be much more durable and will attract more traffic (OK, that's only a positive from an accounting POV), plus I'll be able to ride my road bike the entire length of the trail. On the other hand, we have very few options for unpaved paths locally, and it always stings when we lose another one. Then again, since they prepped it for paving it hasn't been a especially pleasant surface for running or riding, so pavement will be an improvement over the current packed and loose gravel.
I'm also curious as to whether they'll remove the old bridge about halfway between Slingerlands and Voorheesville, like they did the old Rockefeller Rd bridge on the way to South Pearl St.
UPDATE 6-28: On my way over to Five Rivers this evening I drove by the various road crossings and was surprised to find a paved path stretching off into the distance. Looks like they may have the bulk of the paving done.

FIREFLIES & A PAIR OF PLANETS
Saturday, June 16, 2018
In addition to a thin crescent moon, two planets were very prominent in the twilight sky - Venus (above the moon to the left last night, below it to the right tonight) and Jupiter (all by itself to the south.)
During tonight's walk I also saw a number of fireflies, which was really a pleasant surprise - I don't usually expect to see them here in the city.

No Twilight Trail Run for the Turtle
Friday, June 1, 2018
Between needing to rush too much to get on the road in time after spending the morning proctoring finals, and being tired enough that the extra three hours of driving (and 7.4 miles of running) might have been pushing it too much - I've made the call to go straight to NH for tomorrow's du. It sucks missing one of my favorite races but I'm confident it's the best call.
Maybe I'll have enough juice left in my legs tomorrow to go for an evening run at Bluff Point and Haley Farm, especially given that my hotel tomorrow night is only 5-20 min away from there.

AN EVENING OF TURTLES
12.7 Mile Ride on the Mohawk Hudson Bike Path
Thursday, May 31, 2018
Busy evening as part of a busy week but for the sake of my sanity I needed to get outdoors, and a ride seemed the best option with the possibility of the Twilight Trail Run tomorrow evening.
Good choice, it had cooled off a bit and I spotted 5 snapping turtles alongside the path as I rode from the Lions Park to Lock 7, as well as one (or possibly two) sliders. I'm guessing egg laying, based on the number of nests I saw that have already been dug up.
After that it was a teaser of the typical bunny-fest that the bike path becomes on a summer evening.
Would have been nice to ride longer but between conserving my legs and time being at a premium... this was decent. And definitely worth the time away from getting work done, even though that means it will be even later before I get to bed tonight.
