DEEP FREEZE
Wednesday, January 30, 2019
Temperature dropped 15 degrees since I got home from work... tonight' supposed to be well below zero all night, and tomorrow only single digit temperatures with wind chills below zero. Could be worse, though - I believe Rochester is supposed to have windchills down around -20 for the next two days, and parts of the northern Midwest have been colder than the arctic circle this week.
One plus to the deep freeze - there really aren't very many other people out on the street when I go for a walk...

1.3 Mile Walk at Buckingham Pond
Friday, January 25, 2019
Well, partly at Buckingham Pond - even though I wore my microspikes, it was still tough on my knees walking on the churned up and then frozen ice/snow - so after I walked most of the way around, I headed across the street and walked the sidewalks of the apartment complex overlooking the pond.

ICE 😣
Thursday, January 24, 2019
Rain last night, and rain all day today. Rain, rain, rain. Except at some point this evening the temperature made a sharp drop to below freezing... so now everything is encased in ice. I had to walk in the middle of the street to go to the grocery store a couple of blocks away - I could have worn my screw shoes and been fine walking outside, but those can be very slippery when walking indoors on a smooth floor.
I also discovered that all the rain had some water seeping into the basement - nothing that will cause problems, but it did get me thinking that I need to work out a way to get a hose outside if I need to run the pump - last time I used the hole for the dryer vent but that's now spending its time being a dryer vent.

COOOOLD DAY
Monday, January 21, 2019
-5 degrees when I got up this morning, and that was before adding in the wind chill. Early afternoon it's up to a balmy 4 degrees, but the wind hasn't let up...
When I went out to add food to the feeders this morning the hawk flew off, which made me wonder if I'd see any birds today - but late in the morning there was a crowd out there - sparrows, starlings, and a pair of cardinals. I guess needing fuel to stay warm on a frigid day trumps the possibility of being lunch for the hawk.

SNOW DAY
Sunday, January 20, 2019
Not that a Sunday can be a traditional snow day, but everything still seems to have shut down temporarily due to the storm that dropped 18" of snow and sleet on Albany in the last 20 hours or so. And adding to the fun - high speed winds until tomorrow evening that will give us windchills well below zero. Fun, fun, fun.
Not many birds in the backyard, even after I dug out the feeders, though I heard a ruckuss later in the afternoon and looked out to see a dozen or so crows digging in the snow for seed. And a little later I head the coopers hawk squawling - he hung around for a couple of hours, possibly hoping the mourning doves that usually drop by at the end of the day would show up today and provide him with a meal. He stayed long enough that I thought he might spend the night, but I spotted him flying off as I was digging my car out for the 2nd time after going for a short walk.

WILDLIFE ON A COLD, COLD DAY
Friday, January 11, 2019
Walked out to the backyard this morning to add seed to the feeders and was treated to a glimpse of the hawk before it flew off - perhaps this is why the birds seem to be at the feeders less often. Can't really blame him (or her) for wanting to hang out at the birdie buffet (I suspect the squirrels are too big - this is just a small Cooper's hawk.)
I had hoped to go over to the Pond and walk after work, but it was just too dang cold and windy, so I settled for yet another variation on my walk around the local neighborhood. Spotted what I think was a very cold-looking mockingbird huddled in a leafless bush, and since I was walking at sunset during the later parts groups of crows flew overhead, off to wherever they're roosting for tonight.
