Matt Wagner Concludes the Mage Trilogy

And I am both elated at how well he stuck the landing... and saddened at the thought of no more stories to come in the Mage universe.

REBUILDING 2019 - Race #9
Brave the Blizzard 5k Snowshoe Race
Sunday, February 24, 2019
Originally, I was supposed to run the Lake Effect Half Marathon out in Syracuse today... except I've been lazy in my training and would have ended up walking at least 1/4 of the race. So then I planned to head to CT and run the Lake Waramaug Polar Bear Run... except the forecast for today was for constant rain and temps in the mid-30's, making a 2 hr loop around the lake something less than a fun time. So I ended up at my backup to my backup plan - the ARE's local snowshoe race, which while it has the disadvantage of spending a while circling a golf course (boring!) also has the advantage of taking runners into the woods and fields south of the Normanskill, if you sign up for the 5.5mi course... except we found out a few days ago that the 5.5mi was being cancelled for unspecified reasons. And with the rain all night and throughout the race, the expectation was that it would be a mud and slop race rather than snowshoes... sigh.
Except the snow held up surprisingly well, so much so that while I had the option to go with shoes and spikes I quickly decided the snowshoes were the better plan, which led to a last minute scramble to change a few pieces of clothing when I got there 15 min before the start. But after that it was a typical "snowshoe in the rain" race which I walked a lot of because I'm just plain not in very good shape right now.
Afterwards I chatted with some friends for a bit and then got ready to check out those woods and fields - there was no way I was settling for only 5k, and I knew I wouldn't go back out once I was dry and warm at home...

NOT QUITE THE LAKE EFFECT COURSE, BUT CLOSE...
6.5 Mile Run at Onondaga Lake Park
Sunday, February 17, 2019
Close enough that when I finished and asked myself "OK, could you go back out and do that a 2nd time?" the answer was "Not without walking an awful lot of that 2nd time." So that answers the question for next Sunday - this is not the year I run the Lake Effect half 😞 - which I was pretty sure was the case, but this confirmed it.

TOO MUCH UNEVEN ICE!
2 Mile Walk at Green Lakes State Park
Saturday, February 16, 2019
Green Lakes continued the theme of the trails being covered with frozen crap, in this case all the snow and slush that people had churned up when it was warmer which then re-froze into a very uneven slippery mess. Very uncomfortable walking even with my microspikes (Ann found the Yaktrax helpful but it was still difficult going.)
Of course the geese didn't seem to mind - as is often the case when the part of the lake near the beach is unfrozen, there were hundreds of geese there enjoying the open water.

REBUILDING 2019 - Race #8
The Green Is White15k 5k Snowshoe Race
Saturday, February 16, 2019
The spirit was sort-of willing, but the snow conditions were beating the crap out of my knees - anything from calf-deep snow to bare ground, but all covered with a thick layer of frozen snow/ice which typically gave way whenever there was actual snow underneath it. So between the solid surface pounding and the uneven surface in the snowy spots. my knees were not happy by the time I finished a single lap of the course (15k was supposed to be 3 laps) so I called it quits while I could still walk/hike/run another day.
Overall a friendly, low-key event which could be fun in decent snow conditions (though it is on a golf-course...) but all the frozen crap that's out there now is really unpleasant.

7 Mile Run in the Ever Deeper Snow
Tuesday, February 12, 2019
The plan was to get out before the storm got here... instead, I started shortly after the snow began falling and by the time I finished up I was slogging through ankle-deep powder. Not my first choice for my first run in over a week, but opportunities to run during the day on a weekday are few and far between this time of year, so I'll take what I can get. But I suspect I'm going to be feeling this one tomorrow...

SQUIRRELS & CROWS
Tuesday, February 12, 2019
The hawk has definitely made his mark on my feeders - once again the only critters I saw out there were squirrels and crows, and the squirrels are definitely jumpy (though I think that's more due to the local cats than the Coopers hawk... he's on the small side to take down my fat squirrels.)
Another reason I think the cats have been raiding the backyard (other than my seeing them do so) is the way the squirrels sit up at the top of the fence. I would think that would leave them pretty easy targets for aerial hunters.
I nicknamed this one Frosty the Snow Squirrel, though when I sent the picture to Ann she said he's Wilson from Home Improvement - though somehow I doubt the squirrel is thinking "Hidey ho, good neighbor!"
