BACK TO THE SOURCE... PART 2:
I haven't spent nearly as much time at Thacher as I would have liked over the past couple of years... in addition to being a beautiful place, it's also the site of my first ever trail race, way back in 1998 - the currently defunct Indian Ladder 15k, at that time run out of the Glen Doone picnic area (it moved to the Haile's Cave area a few years later, and stayed there until 2016, then had a very brief revival in 2018 running out of the Yellow Rock picnic area.) Today I originally thought to run a modified version of the old courses, which I suppose I did - a mashup of the course I first ran and the 2000-2016 courses. It was a cool rainy day which cut down on the number of folks out on the trails, and the wet weather we've been having for a month or so meant some of the trails were very muddy...

This stretch of the Appalachian Trail (well, the stretch between Sheffield-Egremont Rd & Guilder Hollow Rd) is where I first ran trails, way back in 1997 or 1998. With all the craziness that the last week has brought... I needed to get back to my roots.
It would have been sweet to go all the way to the base of East Mountain before turning around, but I was concerned that I'd end up spending too much time running in the dark if I did that, and also that my legs didn't have 11-11.5 miles in them today. As it turned out, I had plenty of light all the way back to the car... though it got dark pretty quickly once I got back on the road to Albany. Regardless, this was a trip well worth taking.
I sure do miss living down there...

SAD NEWS
BRUCE GUTHRO 1961-2023

Back in late July, Bruce Guthro, the lead singer for Runrig for the last 20 years of the band's career (they retired in 2018), posted a video on his Facebook page:
It was pretty clear from the video that he was very sick, though no formal announcement was made regarding the exact details.
Word came down a couple of days ago that on Sept 5 Bruce passed away after battling cancer. To borrow a phrase he uses in the video, I'm gutted.
I'm sorry I never had a chance to hear Bruce perform live.
