21.2 Mile Ride at the Corning Preserve
Wednesday, July 2, 2008

Spent the bulk of tonight's ride concentrating on riding, though I did stop to take a couple of pictures of the many rabbits I saw along the way. Parts of the Corning Preserve were very busy... not much of a surprise, on a nice summer evening.

It felt good to knock out most of tonight's miles at a decent clip, even though it meant doing two out-and-back rides along the paved path (plus a short ride down to the pedestrian bridge at the start, and a ride around Schuyler Flatts Park on the first lap.

On my way out for the 2nd lap, something hit my helmet just after I left the boat launch parking lot - I figured it was a low hanging branch and thought nothing of it. But then on the way back, the same thing happened twice in the same area, and I began to suspect I was getting attacked by a bird! So I turned around at the parking area and watched as the bird briefly went after another rider, then rode back to the spot to see what it was... there were two of them up in the branches. I'm pretty sure they were tree swallows... all I can guess is that they have a nest right near there and are very protective... either that or I look like a big bug when I'm riding my bike...
