Osprey Nesting Halts Construction in DC
Thursday, May 12, 2011

Work on a multiuse trail along the Anacostia River has been delayed for several months because a pair of osprey are nesting on top of the boom of a crane that was going to be used to build a bridge across railroad tracks. While it's a shame the locals will have to wait longer before they have access to a new trail, I think it's very cool that they're leaving the osprey alone to hatch their eggs and then fledge the youngsters. Apparently there's even talk of building a permanent nesting platform near the site to encourage them to nest there in the future.

The Washington Post has a really nice photo gallery along with brief coverage of the story.
