ITTY BITTY KILDEERS & A BIKE GLITCH SOLVED
16.9 Mile Ride on the Mohawk Hudson Bike Path
Wednesday, June 24, 2015
Well, I think I solved the problem with my bike feeling like it was dragging an anchor since I switched over to the Gatorskins and heavy duty tubes - it looks like the nuts on the rear wheel were overtightened and putting extra pressure on the bearings. I loosened them ever so slightly and now the bike is riding like it did before the new tires. I think it's fair to say that my ride tonight felt the best it has in almost two weeks.
After struggling up and over the hills in front of Knolls and GE R&D, I swung by the parking lot next to the dog park at Blatnick Park to check out the kildeers and see if I could spot their nest - and instead saw a tiny fuzzball of a kildeer zipping around the parking lot near (presumably) mom. When mom moved to chase after him three more youngsters were revealed, who then proceeded to scatter all around the lot, with most ending up over with dad while mom tried to lead me away. Once I got closer to dad, they hustled back over to mom and tucked in underneath her... while I like the cooler weather, perhaps it's not a comfortable for the little fuzzballs.

GRUMBLING KNEE...
5.5 Mile Run at Thacher State Park
Tuesday, June 23, 2015
While it was good to spend some time on the trails at Thacher, and running during the brief downpour felt great (much better than the hot and humid weather the rest of the day) - my knee let me know whenever I hit gnarly terrain or anything going up/down that it wasn't happy.
Unfortunately, while Minnewaska tomorrow night is smooth carriage trails, it's also almost all up and down - and it's where I injured my knee back in 2009, hammering the downhills in the 2nd half of the race. I could go with the self-timed option and take it really easy... but it doesn't see worth the risk.
I had already planned to bail on Nipmuck South Sunday due to the distance and the gnarly terrain... but now I'm questioning if my backup, the Old Goat run at Ganondagan, makes all that much more sense, given all the hills on the course.
Sigh.

ALWAYS BRING A CAMERA... SIGH
1.5 Mile Walk at Buckingham Pond
Saturday, June 20, 2015
I wasn't sure where I'd go for a walk after running errands, and the weather this afternoon was dull and grey, presumably preceding the rain that's supposed to come through tonight. So I left the camera at home, and then on my second time around the pond was treated to the sight of a pair of hawk moths zipping around the flower clusters on the milkweed plants at the eastern end of the pond. Since I didn't have a camera I had to settle for watching them for a few minutes. I suspect they were a different species from the ones I usually see, since the colors were different - both of these had yellow bands on their abdomens. Perhaps a pair of bee hawk moths?

THE KNEES STRIKE AGAIN...
No Races This Weekend for the Turtle
Friday, June 19, 2015
I'm once again tackling the job of reorganizing things at home to make better use of the limited space and seemingly unlimited amount of stuff I own. So the last few days have involved a good deal of moving stuff, packing boxes, and tons of up and down... all of which has left me with a well-tweaked right knee.
It's quite possible it would hold up to Saturday's Vegan Power 25k and Sunday's Greylock Half Marathon... but it's also quite possible that I'd come out of one of those runs with a blown knee and no running for months. So as aggravating as it is, I'm going to try to be smart and not run either race this weekend, as much as I was looking forward to doing both. Hopefully it will bounce back enough that I can do the Summer Solstice 14k at Minnewaska on Wednesday...

QUITE THE CLOUDBURST
Tuesday, June 9, 2015
I was working on the computer this afternoon when I heard the rain start up... and then it got louder, and louder... and when I looked out the door this is what I saw:
Water, water, everywhere... for about 5-10 minutes. Then the rain died off and the sun made it's return... though on the plus side, the storm did pull in some cooler weather than we were having this morning.
