7.9 Mile Ride on the Albany County Rail Trail
Sunday, April 30, 3017
After getting back from the duathlon this morning, I did a bit of work on the "unpaved" wheels for my road bike. I swapped my megarange freewheel (which works great but has a large jump between the two lowest gears) for an 8-speed freewheel with an extra cog in between those two gears - I had done the same with my fat bike this winter. While I was doing that it became very clear that I also need to lube the wheel bearings, so I did that as well, and installed the wheels on the bike.
Given the weather the easiest place to test the work was on the rail trail. I decided to ride some pavement first, so I headed east toward Delmar. Smooth going all around... there was very little clearance between the smallest cog on the new freewheel and the rear fork (8 cogs needs take up more room than 7) but I didn't detect any problems - we'll see what it looks like when I remove the wheel later this week. Back at the parking lot in Slingerlands I headed west on the unpaved trail - that's when the fun started.
Work crews have been prepping the trail for eventual paving later this summer, which has left the trail surface pretty chewed up. I made it about a mile and a half before the combination of the uphill grade, the lousy surface, and my legs being tired from this morning convinced me to throw in the towel and head back. I even left the trail for a bit and rode along Font Grove to give myself a bit of a break. Looks like the unpaved trail is only going to be rideable using a mountain bike until they get it paved.

CONCRETE TURTLE
4.3 Mile Run on the Albany County Rail Trail
Thursday, April 27, 2017
As in, it feels like someone filled my legs with concrete and then said "Have fun, mate!" I was pretty sure I knew how the run would go based on walking around during the day but this afternoon confirmed it - my get up and go has gotten up and went. Even once I turned around and had a gentle downhill grade to take me back to the car, my legs showed no sign of loosening up or being capable of anything resembling a faster speed.
Shame, too, because it was a warm, sunny afternoon - nice weather for being out on my feet, especially with the trees and bushes starting to green up.
This pretty much decides it - no paddle tri for me on Saturday, unless I wake up tomorrow morning to a miraculous recovery.

11.5 Mile Ride on the Mohawk Hudson Bike Path
Wednesday, April 26, 2017
I'd planned to run but the weather was good enough (and the forecast for tomorrow iffy enough) that I decided to take the bike out instead. My legs let me know they weren't thrilled right from the start, and it seemed like a bit of a chore to head west, possibly because of the headwind, possibly because of tired legs, and possibly because I had something in my wheel hubs tightened too much. I tried loosening the latter very slightly about halfway along, but by then the legs were grumbling enough that it's tough to tell if it did any good. I ended up stopping when I got back to the trailhead, even though I'd been planning to head east for a few miles more... Saturday's bike course is long (by early spring standards) and hilly, and I wanted to have some hope that my legs might recover before then.
... not that it's much hope. I'm definitely starting to wonder if I should be planning to skip the paddle triathlon, as frustrating as that will be. But it would be even more frustrating to start it and not make the time cutoff for the ride, or finish it and end up unable to bike or run next week because of my legs being beyond trashed. Guess it's wait and see what they feel like tomorrow.

A BRIEF TASTE OF SUMMER...
11.6 Mile Ride on the Albany County Rail Trail
Monday, April 10, 2017
80⁰ in early April... pleasant weather but way too early. Still, it made for pretty pleasant riding, in shorts and a short-sleeved jersey no less.
I wanted to do something different so I took my mountain bike over to Slingerlands and rode the unpaved stretch of trail out to Voorheesville. They've clearly been working on the trail, probably to prepare it for the paving that's supposed to happen this summer.
When I got back to Slingerlands I wasn't ready to wrap it up, so I rode the paved section over to Veterans Memorial Park before heading back to the car. Lots of people on the trail this evening, and riding my mountain bike on pavement is never my first preference... but it was still an awfully nice evening for a ride.

12.3 Mile Ride Through the Corning Preserve & Schuyler Flatts Park
Sunday, April 9, 2017
No doubt when tomorrow rolls around and my legs are howling as I walk up and down stairs I will wonder why on earth I thought it was a good idea to go for a ride when I got back from RI. And the answer will be the same as it was this afternoon - it was close to 70⁰ and sunny, how could I not go for a ride?
It was fairly clear that sections of the preserve were underwater not long ago - no big surprise given how high the river has been.

2.3 Mile Walk To & Around Washington Lake
Friday, April 7, 2017
Grey, chilly day... probably why there was almost nobody at Washington Lake this evening. Not that I minded...
Spotted a male/female pair of wood ducks when I crossed the bridge the first time (and of course reminded myself to always bring my camera.) I've got to wonder of it's the same pair I saw at Buckingham Pond last night.
As I was walking to the park, I had the idea for a two lakes run (since technically speaking it's Buckingham Lake) - run from my place out to one of the parks, do at least one loop around the lake, then head over to the other park and do the same before going home. Probably a minimum of seven miles needed, which is a decent short-to-medium run at the moment. Maybe once things get a little warmer and greener...

AROUND & AROUND & AROUND...
4.1 Mile Run at Buckingham Pond
Thursday, April 6, 2017
Really wanted to get in a run between the end of work and needing to be back there a few hours later for a special event... so I sucked it up and headed over to Buckingham Pond. I might have been better off skipping the run and going for a walk - legs were dead most of the time - but so it goes. Stopped a little earlier than I'd planned (hoped for between 5-6 miles) just because time was getting short and it didn't seem like doing another mile or so was going to gain me anything...
Hopefully my legs will feel better for Saturday's run at Mohonk and Sunday's half marathon in RI...
Both the male and female wood duck were at the pond today... it would be really cool if they nested there but I suspect they're just doing a layover.
