DISAPPOINTING
Friday, May 31, 2019
Even though it wasn't even remotely practical, part of me still was hoping to go run the Twilight Trail Race in Groton CT tonight, because it's one of my favorite races to do this time of year. But doing it would have meant leaving Albany by 2 PM or so and also would have added at 2-3 hours of driving to my time in the car today. In the end taking a nap turned out to be a lot more important, and even then I didn't get on the road until after 8 PM.
I had hoped to get in a short run or ride today, to loosen my legs up a bit before tomorrow's 10k... but between the nap and the various chores and packing that needed doing, that gradually went out the window. Also quite disappointing, given the sunny weather.
Oh, well, tomorrow is another day.

BALANCE
Friday, May 17, 2019
First of all, let me say the Cobra Kai Seasons 1 & 2 on YouTube Premium are incredibly awesome, and anyone who is a fan of the Karate Kid movies from the 80's and the 90's needs to see it. Had someone told me last year that I would pay $10 a month to YouTube I would have told them they were delusional, but after watching the two free episodes that started the first season I signed up immediately. My only gripes are the year or so wait between seasons (which are only 5 hours long) and the lack of physical media - I want these on disc so I can watch them without an internet connection (or in case some executive idiot decides these are no longer worth paying for or that they can make more money with their own streaming service - I'm looking squarely at you, Marvel/Netflix - and suddenly they disappear from YouTube's Premium platform.)
I rewatched Season 1 in the days before Season 2 dropped and this piece from episode 5 definitely spoke to me.
Some things this year have gone great, others not so much - I definitely need to find the balance to my life again, without losing the things that have been going really well.

A REALLY BAD IDEA...
20.8 Mile Ride on the Erie Canalway Trail (Pattersonville - Schoharie Crossing)
Wednesday, May 15, 2019
My legs are still feeling the effects of last weekends lunacy, and tomorrow night I've agreed to run the CDPHP Workforce Challenge on the school team. So going out for the longest ride I've done this year was not a good plan... but as much as it hurt at times and is going to really hurt tomorrow night, it was nice to be out on the bike on a section of trail that I haven't ridden since last fall.
I also gained some useful if frustrating information. A few years ago Yellowjacket Racing put a time cutoff on finishing the bike leg of the River Challenge Tri/Du - 2.5 hours. That includes the 5k run and 20 miles of hills on the bike. Based on tonight's ride, I don't have a prayer of making that cutoff - if I were in better shape I could just plan to hammer it out harder on race day and maybe make it, but right now I don't have enough hammering to last that long. So rather than start a race where I know ahead of time I'm going to fail, I'll find something less depressing and demoralizing to do that weekend. If nothing else it should mean more time to spend with Ann, which is a good thing given we've had no time together since the middle of April.

TORTURE TEST COMPLETE
Saturday, May 11, 2019
Between how my legs were feeling by race#3, how tired I was of driving (somewhere between 9 & 10 hours on the road between Friday afternoon and Saturday night), and the prospect of wet dreary weather, I decided to bail on the race at Vassar Farm. Could I have done it? Sure. Would it have been really slow? Definitely. But where I looked forward to doing the first three races, Sunday just sounded like a grind.
On a positive note, they were willing to change the date of my reservation at the New Paltz Rodeway Inn so now I have a room to go to after the Summer Solstice 14k in June and I'm not out the cost of the room for not showing up Saturday night.
The next few days will determine the ultimate results of the Torture Test. I no longer doubt that I could finish the Rat Snake 18k, but it unclear if I'll want to pay the price for doing so (in terms of how long afterwards my legs will be dead) especially with the River Challenge Triathlon coming up on Memorial Day weekend.

TORTURE TEST
Thursday, May 9, 2019
So I'm horribly out of shape and the Rat Snake 11 miler is coming up with sickening rapidity...
Time for a test to see how my legs respond!
Friday night - the Cap & Gown 5k at Middlesex Community College in Middletown CT, since I'll be right near there anyway for
Saturday morning - the Salmon River 5.5mi Run in Colchester CT
which should leave me just enough time to drive to
Saturday night - the Towpath Trail Run 10k in St Johnsville, NY (yes, pretty much the exact opposite direction, and I'll likely have to skip the legendary post-race food at Salmon River... sigh.) And the, just to make the weekend complete,
Sunday morning - the Wa Wa Wally Waddle 5k at Vassar Farm (yup, THAT Vassar... wandered the trails on the farm property a few times in my 4 years at the college.
Hopefully after all of that it will be clear whether or not I'll be able to finish Rat Snake and if so, what kind of price I'll have to pay to do so.

FEATHERED FRIENDS
Sunday, May 5, 2019
Now that the trees are leafing in, I seem to be getting more birds at the feeders again... possibly because it's more difficult for the hawks to pick them off (or maybe food is easy enough to find elsewhere that the hawk(s) don't need my backyard buffet.) One that stands out is the white-throated sparrow.

While these guys are apparently fairly common, I've only seen them once in a great while at the feeder... but over the last few weeks, there's been one out there pretty regularly. I've also been hearing them calling. Still, it was a surprise to take a look today and see half a dozen or so - three or four adults and a couple of juveniles.
UPDATE - The white-throated sparrows were around all day; even when they weren't looking for food, I could hear them calling. In the evening I had another treat - in addition to the pair of house finches that are pretty regular visitors, a pair of goldfinches spent some time at the thistle feeder. I don't know if I've ever seen them at my feeders before...
