NOT AS COLD AS I'D EXPECTED...
4 Mile Walk on the Albany County Rail Trail
Monday, January 20, 2020
... though definitely colder than a lot of this winter has been.
The rail trail was pretty well packed, of course it helps that even the unpacked snow doesn't cover my shoes (3-4" deep.) I may try running there later this week (instead of heading over to the Mohawk River bike path) and I'm also thinking about breaking out my fat bike... could have been a nice ride today, if my legs had been up to it (they weren't.)

DO BETTER 2020 - Race #5
Cock-a-Doodle-Shoe 10k Snowshoe Race
Sunday, January 19, 2020
Well, that was grueling in just about every way possible.
First, I drove to my hotel outside Plattsburgh last night during the storm. Fair weather travel time 2.5 hours, last night took me just under 4 hrs. Nothing like doing 40-45 mph for 150 miles of highway...
Then this morning I thought I remembered how to get from registration to the start, and ended up doing over an extra mile before finally following the group to the start. So I'm going to estimate I'd covered at least 1.5 miles in addition to the race... I should have had the GPS going.
The race was itself had great snowshoeing conditions. Unfortunately the last time I snowshoed in great conditions was probably when I ran this race back in 2018. As I said to a newbie before the race, even after 15 years it never fails to surprise me how hard I have to work to go so slow. This was mostly a hiking event for me. I was tempted at several points to cut the course short and declare a DNF, but I did manage to keep myself going (albeit slower and slower as the miles added up) and finally finished.
Now we'll see if my legs recover enough for Tuesday's 5k at Gore... right now they feel rather like someone spent a couple of hours beating them with hammers today.
(On the plus side, clear roads all the way back...)

SNOW & COLD MAKE A COMEBACK
6.4 Mile Run To Buckingham Pond & Back
Saturday, January 18, 2020
I could have gone out this morning and run in the cold on nice, clear paths... instead I waited until this afternoon so that the storm could drop an inch or so of snow and spend the 90+ minutes I was out there snowing on me. Though I do come across as much more of a running badass running during the storm.
Somehow I think tomorrow's 10k snowshoe race is going to be a whole lot harder than this was...

SOMETHING TO BE HAPPY ABOUT...
Thursday, January 16, 2019
My internet service has been out since I got home last night... tonight I managed to access the control software for my modem/router and it was showing a strong DSL signal coming in, so I was sure I was going to need to manually reset the modem settings... which likely was going to mean a call to Verizon to try and get them to tell me the correct settings. And I absolutely, positively, completely and totally HATE calling Verizon. They are one of the few organizations I deal with where I've actually ended up yelling at someone on the other end of the phone line. More than once.
Except tonight while I was trying to get my mobile broadband setup to work on either of my laptops (both of which I recently upgraded to Windows 10, thanks to Microsoft finally closing the door on all Win7 updates) the modem started blinking furiously at me and the next thing I knew, I had internet again. So apparently I was wrong it and it was all Verizon's fault after all, and it ended up getting fixed without my having to endure the potentially most stressful parts of getting service restored.
Small victories are still victories, and having internet access again is awfully good.

OOPS - SHOULD'VE CHECKED THOSE EMAILS MORE CLOSELY
7.5 Mile Run at Mendon Ponds Park
Sunday, January 12, 2020
... because one of them talked about how the park folks decided to postpone all the Winterfest activities scheduled for today to a later, yet-to-be-determined date. (Yesterday's 60 degree temperatures were supposed to drop down to low 30's, accompanied by very strong winds. Overnight you could hear the wind howling outside.) Including the 8ksnowshoe trail race (which may or may not be rescheduled, depending on what day the park picks, and which I may or may not be able to get to, depending on the same factor.)
Fortunately it was pretty obvious that the race wasn't happening (three cars in the lot at 9:30 and the lodge locked up tight) so instead I drove over to the beach lot and did a slightly longer (and probably much less hilly) run than the race would have been... though I did tackle a few of the race hills just so I could say I wasn't a total wimp.

BLACK ICE... UGH.
9.1 Mile Ride on the Mohawk Hudson Bike Path
Monday, January 6, 2020
I would have liked to stay out for a few more miles, but every bit of moisture on the path froze as the Sun started to set. There was only one spot where I really thought I might be in trouble (the short hill from the bike path down to Lock 7 Rd) but it didn't seem worth the risk just to get in a couple more miles. It also helped that my legs are definitely taking time to get used to my increased activity level... lots of mild grumbling was going on throughout the ride.
