LONG RUN... NOT!
10.3 Mile Run on the Mohawk-Hudson Bike Path
Friday, June 20, 2008
Set out to do 15 miles on the bike path this afternoon... but I guess this just wasn't the day for a long run. My legs never really loosened up, and the various aches and pains never relented, and by the time I finished my first 7 mile out-and-back, it was clear I just plain didn't have any juice for another 8 miles... so I toughed out another 3 and called it an evening. Sigh.
On the plus side, saw lots of wildlife... multiple rabbits, and the chipmunk population is clearly booming, because those little suckers were everywhere. I even saw a muskrat in the grass alongside the path. Lots of birds too... the usual robins, red-winged blackbirds, cardinals, catbirds, and chicadees, as well as a mockingbird and yet another turkey. (That makes five turkeys in four rides/runs... maybe I should rename this blog "The Way of the Turkey"...)
On the minus side, the mosquitoes and deerflies were out in force... I was swarmed by the rotten bloodsuckers toward the end of the run when I stopped to take some rabbit pictures. And I counted at least a dozen turtle nests dug up... it's a wonder any make it long enough to hatch babies.
So I guess I'll be taking another shot at a 15 miler next week... all I know is the Grand Island Trail Marathon is approaching all too quickly...
