Frustration
Friday, April 19, 2013

Being sick all last weekend put me behind the proverbial eight-ball at work, and as the week progressed it became increasingly obvious that spending 8-9 hours in the car this weekend wasn't an option. So no Muddy Sneaker 20k for me tomorrow and more importantly, no time spent with my sweetheart this weekend (who has been sick herself.) Phooey.

After repeated tries to get the shop that's supposed to be working on my car on the phone this afternoon, I finally gave up and drove over there. When I spoke to them on Wednesday at lunch time, the car was supposedly almost completely taken apart (well, the relevant parts were) and the replacement parts were there - meaning another 4-5 hours of work and it should be done. Today I found out that none of the repair has been done yet, so it looks like Monday afternoon is the earliest I'll get my Civic back. Which means I'm stuck driving the damn loaner Forester around for another three days. I don't think it would aggravate me quite as much if I thought they were actually working on the car and it was just taking a long time because the mechanic isn't used to working on Hondas... but I suspect instead that most of the time it's been there (1 1/2 weeks now) it's just been sitting there with nothing happening, probably with other vehicles getting priority. All I can say is, once I have my Civic back and I'm confident that job was done right - that's the last time this shop will work on one of my vehicles (after 13 years of doing the major work needed on both my old Soob and my Civic) and I will not be going there to buy another car when the Civic reaches the end of its cost-effective life in a few more years.

Arrgh.

FINALLY! Home Again!
Friday, March 22, 2013

Other than a short delay in Cleveland, things went smoothly... but flying all night (and essentially all day, thanks to the six hour time difference) really sucks. I broke down and paid $8 for movies and TV on the flight between Hilo and LA... I ended up watching episodes of Big Bang Theory and a strange sitcom I hadn't heard of from cable, then "Cloud Atlas" (which might have made more sense if I hadn't missed the 1st 20 minutes and had been more awake... or maybe not.) The best choice I made was "Argo", which was surprisingly good for a movie starring Affleck (perhaps he's a better director than actor...)

We left temperatures in the 70's and returned to temperatures in the 30's with snow on the ground... but it's good to be home!

Leaving "Paradise"
Thursday, March 21, 2013

Back in the Hilo airport again... seems like we've spent far too much time over the last week sitting at airports waiting for flights (actually, about 8 hours, not counting layovers between connections.) Of course, once the plane finally takes off... we're in for about 11 1/2 hours in the air, plus layovers. Gah...

Hawaii has been interesting, in some ways not at all what I expected and in others exactly what I'd anticipated. Ann wouldn't mind staying longer but I'm ready to get back to the northeast. It's been nice visiting here... but I don't think I'd want to live here all the time. I'v got too much of the Northeast in my blood...

Off to "Paradise"
Friday, March 15, 2013

This morning we took off from Rochester for the long, long flight to Hilo, HI. Our initial flight was delayed slightly due to the late arrival of our plane, and we flew out in the middle of snow flurries. Fortunately we were still able to make all of our connections without a hitch.

The flight from Newark to LA was particularly enjoyable, if lengthy - the plane had a sizeable selection of movies and television to watch for free, and I took the opportunity to finally watch "The Amazing Spiderman" (not bad, but Peter Parker was played as something of an obnoxious punk, and I'd have preferred the Lizard to look more like his comic book counterpart) and "Wreck It Ralph", a very clever cartoon with all sorts of nods to classic video games.

Sadly, the flight from LA to Hilo only had pay-per-view, and it seemed like we'd never be done flying... but after about 13 1/2 hours in the air (and two hours changing gates on the ground) we arrived in Hawaii to humid temperatures in the 60's and the loud chirping of coqui frogs.

LIGHTNING BELOW... WONDERFUL RAIN!
Wednesday, July 25, 2012

A relatively uneventful set of flights back - both left on time, which was a blessing considering we were scheduled to arrive in Rochester after midnight. Kudos to AirTran... even if our pilot on the first leg introduced himself as Luke Skywalker, accompanied by Han Solo and Chewbacca the wookiee and flying the Millenium Falcon. Fortunately we didn't end up on the Death Star.

The 2nd leg got a bit bumpy as we approached Rochester - storms again! Watching lightning flashes from above has not lost its appeal!

We exited the terminal to light rain and wonderfully cool temperatures. I stood out in the driveway and enjoyed it while Ann opened up the house... not only was it exceptionally pleasant after the last 5 days of 100+ temperatures, but we desperately need the water too.

It's good to be back in our neck of the woods.
