FREAKIN' BUGS!!!!
3.2 Mile Run at the Vischer Ferry Nature Preserve
Wednesday, July 9, 2008

I had planned to run 8-10 miles today at the Vischer Ferry Nature Preserve, and was particularly pleased when I found myself alone in the parking lot on arrival - I would have the trails mostly to myself!

Well, not quite to myself... every time I stopped to walk or take a photo, I found myself swarmed by mosquitoes and deer flies, despite having doused myself with my usual foul-smelling bug spray. And it became apparent that they were going to find anyplace I hadn't sprayed and leave me a mass of bug-bites... gah. After about 3 miles I headed down a connecting trail, thinking I'd go back to the car and give myself a fresh dousing of bug spray... and had so many deer flies buzzing around me that I gave up and called it a night. I was spending more energy being aggravated by the bugs than I was running.

Shame, too, because in the short time I was there I heard and saw several herons, kingfishers, and wood ducks (complete with wood ducklings.) It would have been nice to see what other wildlife the preserve had in store. Oh, well. Another day...
