Cycling the Erie Canal
Tuesday, July 8, 2008
While riding along the bike path this evening I noticed a number of freshly-painted markers on the pavement that were some variation of the following
and I was suddenly reminded that this is the week of Park & Trails NY's annual Cycling the Erie Canal tour, a 400 mile ride that starts in Buffalo and ends in Albany. Along the way riders average 50 miles a day, much of it along the completed sections of the Canalway trail. Along the way riders are treated to guided tours of museums and historical sites relevant to the Erie Canal.
I've always found the idea of a multi-day ride across the state very appealing... don't know if I'll ever do any of P&T NY's tours (they also do a ride from Albany to New York City in August, the Great Hudson Valley Pedal) in part because they're a bit expensive due to all the services offered during the rides and in part because I'm not much of a social animal... but maybe one of these summers I'll get my act together and do it myself (somehow I can't see Ann being too thrilled acting as a handler for several days across the state... but one of the pluses to riding rather than running is you can carry all your gear on the bike and not need a handler!)
