T-5 DAYS!!!
A Nervous Countdown to SEHGAHUNDA
Monday, May 23, 2011

Five days from now I will be waiting to start the Sehgahunda Trail Marathon at along the Finger Lakes Trail through Letchworth State Park south of Rochester. This will be the 7th marathon I've attempted and hopefully my 5th finish by the time Saturday afternoon rolls around. I say hopefully because Sehgahunda is different from every other marathon I've run in having a series of time cutoffs from mile 15.4 onward, and while I think I can make them, I'm certainly not sure... and my slow finishing times at the longer races I've done this spring don't exactly fill me with confidence. It doesn't help that I also didn't complete as many long runs as I'd hoped to, before going into rest/recover mode - and while I think the course will be easier than Nipmuck (the section of the FLT I ran two summers ago, as part of the Dam Good trail race, certainly was, but that's only the first seven miles of Sehgahunda) I won't really know until I run it. So in a lot of ways this race probably has me more nervous than any other I've run in recent memory.

On the other hand, I do have some positive indicators that give me hope I'll be successful. I've got years of distance running under my belt, even if I haven't always kept up my conditioning for longer distances. During some of my longer races this spring I've comfortably maintained an average pace a few minutes slower than the paces needed to complete Sehgahunda; if I can do the same on Saturday, I'll  have a decent time cushion built up by the first cutoff, giving me some leeway if things start to go south in the latter half of the race. And while I haven't done all the long training runs I'd wanted to, I did have a couple of tough back-to-back weekends that went reasonably well.

In the end, there's only one way to know how it's going to turn out - stay healthy this week, get to the race early on Saturday, try not to go out too fast, try to keep from blowing up before the end... and go the distance.

Five days to go...

1.8 Mile Walk at the Crossings of Colonie
Monday, May 16, 2011

No surprise, my legs were pretty beat today (well... I did run 21 miles and walk 7.6 miles over the last two days...) so I decided to take it easy and go for a walk after work. Ended up choosing the Crossings of Colonie just because it was close to several places where I had errands to run.

This time around I headed over to the wooded section in the southeast corner of the park. Wandered through the woods for a while, including following a couple of trails which I suspect are very unofficial. After that I headed over toward the main entrance, with a long pause to watch dozens of swallows swooping all over the place over a marshy pond. They're incredible to watch as they dive, jink, and soar, and I'm amazed there aren't any mid-air collisions. I even managed to shoot some video of them.

Incredibly there were two groups of runners in the park today - one group that seemed to be part of the class put on by Cicotti Rec Center and the other looked like it was some sort of "learn to run" program, possibly one of the ones put on by Fleet Feet Albany. Watching them almost made me wish I was running this evening... and then I'd walk up a tiny rise, feel my legs groan, and decided walking was a much better plan.

LOTS OF BIRDS... BUT NO SEALS...
2.6 Mile Walk at the John H. Chafee Nature Preserve
Saturday, May 14, 2011

Looked through my copy of Weber's Weekend Walks in Rhode Island last night to try and find a place to stop between Point Judith and Willington and eventually settled on Rome Point, or more specifically the John H. Chafee Nature Preserve which includes Rome Point on Narragansett Bay, in part because it sounded like an easy walk through the woods and along the shore and in part because of the possibilities of seeing seals (admittedly a very low possibility - apparently the seals are there mostly in the winter and head back to northern waters in warmer weather. Plus they prefer to rest on rocks out in the bay at low tide, and I would be there near high tide.)

The first surprise was the spacious parking lot that apparently didn't exist when Weber wrote the guidebook... much better than parking alongside the road! The first part of the walk was along an old dirt road, with a nice gentle downhill grade. Lots of birds all around as I walked - robins, chickadees, catbirds, and towhees, and probably lots more I never saw. Passed a couple of groups walking out with their dogs, but for the most part I had the path to myself.

The view once I reached the bay was pretty nice - I could see the bridge over to Jamestown to the south, and the beach curved around to the northeast to Rome Point. So I walked along the beach, which seemed to be made mostly of shells - I don't know if I've ever been on a beach that was so thickly covered with shells before.

Out at the point I could see the tips of one of the rocks poking through the water, with a cormorant perched on top - but no seals (which I expected, but I still hoped all the way there that I might get lucky.) I'll just have to go back in cooler weather (maybe in November after the Lil Rhody Runaround trail race...)

I took a trail back, with some nice views off the other side of the point before heading back into the woods. Saw signs that there used to be some sort of buildings  back there, and toward the end of the walk - the ubiquitous junked car completely surrounded by trees that must have grown up since the car was left there.

My timing was pretty good, because on the way out I passed three guys who looked ready to do some serious fishing, and just missed a very noisy group heading down the main trail I'd walked in on. So I left just in time, before the peace and quiet disappeared. It was also timely because my legs were getting more than a bit tired... not really a surprise, between walking almost 5 miles and running a bit over 6 miles this morning and afternoon... it will be interesting to see how well they hold up to the rigors of Soapstone (definitely one of the tougher spring trail courses) tomorrow.

For more info on the seals at Rome Point, I strongly recommend the excellent Rome Point seals website.

0.7 Mile Walk Around Buckingham Lake
Friday, May 13, 2011

I had thought I might stop at Ooms Conservation Area on my way to Connecticut, but ended up leaving later than I originally intended and that meant changing plans a bit to a shorter walk around Buckingham Lake. No sign of Momma Mallard and her crew of fuzzy young 'uns, but I did see a fairly large snapping turtle and also fish guarding their "nests" (at least that's what I've always assumed they are) and the typical assortment of male mallards hanging out along the shore in several spots. A number of the trees are also in full bloom, which is both fragrant and very nice to look at. So while it wasn't quite the walk I had hoped to do today, it was still a pleasant chance to be outdoors before sitting in the car for 2 3/4 hours. And I suspect I wll get in plenty of time on my feet tomorrow on Block Island, between the 10k trail race and my desire to revisit some of the areas I remember exploring 15 years ago when I was last there.

Osprey Nesting Halts Construction in DC
Thursday, May 12, 2011

Work on a multiuse trail along the Anacostia River has been delayed for several months because a pair of osprey are nesting on top of the boom of a crane that was going to be used to build a bridge across railroad tracks. While it's a shame the locals will have to wait longer before they have access to a new trail, I think it's very cool that they're leaving the osprey alone to hatch their eggs and then fledge the youngsters. Apparently there's even talk of building a permanent nesting platform near the site to encourage them to nest there in the future.

The Washington Post has a really nice photo gallery along with brief coverage of the story.

NIGHT ALONG THE RIVER
6.3 Mile Run on the Mohawk Hudson Bike Path
Wednesday, May 11, 2011

Had a dinner to go to tonight with one of my students (he was being recognized as the senior with the top GPA and had nominated me as a teacher who has had a great deal of influence on time at the Academies - in all honesty a real honor for me) so I wasn't able to get outside right after work. But I packed my gear so I could go for a run if I wanted to afterwards, and when we left the dinner it was just too nice a night to head home and indoors. Instead I headed over to the Niskayuna Lions Park to put in a few miles on the bike path.

Perfect night for a run... it might have even been a bit too warm at first, but it cooled down nicely as time passed. The sky was clear and a cresent moon lit things up nicely. All manner of frogs were calling in the river, ponds, and swamps along the path - quite the serenade! There were a lot of cars in the lot when I first arrived (unusual, given that I got there a little before 9 PM) but other than a few people right at the start I didn't run into anyone while I was out there.

Back when I lived in the country I used to run at night fairly regularly in the summer. It was cooler than during the day, and often I'd find myself unable to get to sleep so I'd hit the road for 6-9 miles in the dark. Traffic was usually light enough on the back roads that during a 90 minute run (I was a bit faster back then!) I might see one or two cars. I've always enjoyed the peacefulness of running in the dark and the challenge of running more by feel than by seeing the ground ahead of me (admittedly, I prefer to run trails with a headlamp to try to avoid tripping over rocks, roots, and holes.) So having to run tonight after dark was a blessing in disguise and one I think I will try to repeat occasionally as the spring, summer, and fall progress.

IRONY...
Sunday, May 8, 2011

So I finish my run and get back to the car, just as the folks in the van next door open their doors and two dogs dash out, circle the car to check me out, and then continue running around. They call the dogs and manage to nab one, get it to sit, and snap on a leash (umm... shouldn't that have been on before they opened the car doors? Why are so many dog owners absolute morons when it comes to keeping their dogs safe?) The other continues to range further and further away as they call, whistle, etc. before finally coming back close enough that they could nab and leash it.

Funny thing was, they had a sign on the side of the van for dog obedience training.

Sleeping Through the Thom Bugliosi 26k Trail Race... Aaargh!
Saturday, May 7, 2011

Slept through my alarm this morning and woke up about 20 min before I was supposed to be on the road to Hammond Hill State Forest in Dryden to run the Thom Bugliosi trail race. If I'd rushed like crazy I probably could have made it... but I suspect I would have gotten there and found out I'd forgotten something important, like my shoes. And I was still pretty tired - staying up most of the night Thursday to grade exams took a lot out of me. So I turned off the alarm and went back to sleep, darn it.

It's particularly annoying because the race has a cutoff for running the 2nd loop, and I was planning to use it as a test to indicate whether I'm on track to being able to make the cutoffs at Sehgahunda in three weeks. Of course, if I hadn't made the cutoff (which happened a couple of years ago) I'd be spending the next three weeks worrying... so maybe it's for the best. But I'm still disappointed with myself for oversleeping and missing the race.

2.3 Mile Walk To & Through Washington Park
Friday, May 6, 2011

Exhausted from a very long night grading exams and I had a parking spot right in front of the house, so I really wasn'y inclined to drive anywhere this evening. Instead I took the opportunity to walk to Washington Park, walked a loop around the lake, and then headed back home again. Things were hopping in the park - warm, summer-like evening, plus they were getting ready for the annual Tulip Festival tomorrow.

I spent much of the time being reminded why I don't go to Washington Park very often - too many people. Plus I can't say I find the walk there all that pleasant... heading downtown the neightborhoods definitely start to slide downhill (then again, I've thought my neighborhood has been sliding downhill for a while now!) So while it was a mostly pleasant walk, it's not one I expect to repeat in the near future.

BIRDS & FLOWERS
1.6 Mile Walk Around Buckingham Lake
Thursday, May 5, 2011

I'd been hoping to go for a run this evening but when I did the math I just had too much work to disappear for 2 1/2 hours (45 min round trip to a trailhead plus 90-105 min of running.) But I did need to stop at the store so I decided to first go to Buckingham Lake and walk the path around the lake twice. It was a nice evening for a walk, and especially nice to see the trees budding and blossoming and various other flowers starting to bloom. Right at the start I got a couple of nice shots of a squirrel perched on the edge of a trash can - no one can say those guys haven't adapted to living around people. Also got to see quite a few ducks and best of all, a female with a group of tiny little fuzzy ducklings. I spent a while watching them dart around getting food and, surprise, took a lot of pictures of the little fuzzballs. Along the way I also spotted a Baltimore Oriole and a small dark blue bird I'd never seen before - sadly he was too quick for me to get a clear photo, but I'm pretty sure he was a Black-throated Blue Warbler, and quite a striking little guy he was, too. In the end I probably took more time for my walk than I should have, but I'm glad I got outside and saw more than a few sights that made me smile.

Sleeping Through the Platte Clove Mountain Run
Wednesday, May 4, 2011

I had planned to drive down to West Saugerties tonight and once again run the 1st run in the Catskill Mountain Spring Series - a relatively flat mile followed by 2 miles up the steep and winding Platte Clove Mountain Rd, through an area called the Devil's Kitchen. The road is sufficiently steep and treacherous that in the winter the twon closes it because it's too dangerous to plow. I've run Platte Clove twice - well, I ran the 1st mile and then power-hiked the last two miles - and I always enjoy the atmosphere of the three series runs: low-key and a lot of cameraderie among the runners.

Instead I came home and decided that between being exhausted and having quite a bit of work today - a nap followed by an evening working made more sense than spending most of the evening driving, running, and then driving again. A shame really - the cool weather might have helped me run better than I have previously. Then again, given how my legs felt going up the stairs at work today - maybe not.

10.5 Mile Ride on the Mohawk Hudson Bike Path
Tuesday, May 3, 2011

I found it really difficult to get into tonight's ride, partially because I was pretty tired and my legs are still recovering from last weekend's duathlon/15mile double header and partially because it was a grey, chilly evening. The chilly part was a surprise - it had been warm and muggy all day, but I guess the cold front had started to move in while I was teaching this week's karate lesson. So that caught me by surprise and I wasn't quite dressed for it. Even so, getting out for a shortened ride is better than not getting out at all!

1 Mile Walk at Onondaga Lake Park & Long Branch Park
Sunday, May 1, 2011

By the time I reached Syracuse the sky had cleared and it was a gorgeous sunny day. Drove by Onondaga Lake Park and saw that the lake was the highest I've ever seen it, flooding much of the park visible from the Thruway. So of course I had to stop and take some pictures...

The flooding has definitely made a real mess, with all the flotsam and jetsam that usuually ends up along the shoreline off in the grass. It will definitely take a lot of work the clean up, once the waters recede. The ducks and geese, on the other hand, didn't seem to mind the situation at all.
