NO DRYDEN LAKE TRI FOR THE TURTLE... SIGH...

... and I have only my own stupidity to blame for it. Turns out the AC units at the Ithaca Rodeway Inn are very loud... and the fan runs constantly when the unit is on. I spent about three hours trying to get to sleep and finally gave up. And since they want us at Dryden Lake ridiculously early (2 1/2 hours before the start) I don't think 3 hours of sleep is going to cut it.
Of course, what I should have done immediately is what I finally did at 3 AM... turned off the dang AC completely and fell asleep almost immediately. Dumb dumb dumb.
So I guess I'll get to Taughannock Falls and back home to Rochester a good deal earlier than originally planned - and I'll hit the trails for a much longer bike ride this afternoon.

So much for this weekend's races... Friday I decided I was too tired to spend 10+ hours driving between Friday afternoon and Saturday evening, so I cancelled my room and skipped the Parvin State Park Duathlon in NJ yesterday. I'll have to get a NJ race in later this year. I was still planning to do the Greylock Half Marathon today - right up to the point where my alarm went off, I fell back asleep, and woke up too late to have any real chance of getting there on time. Bloody shame, too - conditions today were about as good as they get for a mid-June race.

SIGH... NO RYE-BY-THE-SEA DUATHLON FOR THE TURTLE...
Friday, June 1, 2012
A tough decision, but I think the right one... the forecast for tomorrow morning calls for temperatures in the low 50's and rain, which would make for a miserable, unsafe morning. Factor in the cost of a motel room and the additional driving to get there and the decision became something of a no-brainer.
Sometimes I have to remind myself that I do races for a couple of reasons - (1) to motivate myself to get out and run, ride, etc, (2) to push myself harder than I would on a "training" run or ride, (3) to give myself an excuse to visit cool places, and (4) to have some fun. If the forecast is correct, tomorrow will not be fun... and afterwards I'd end up just driving home, instead of visiting parks and nature preserves in the general vicinity of the race. So after the Twilight Trail Run wraps up tonight, I'll be heading home instead of up into New Hampshire.
I'll just have to get in some running and riding closer to home this weekend...

The Josh Verdict
Tuesday, August 30, 3011Here's the elevation profile for the Vermilion Harbor Olympic Du bike course, which kicked my backside big time:

Here's the elevation profile for the Josh Billings bike course:

And here are the two side by side (they start at different elevations, so not quite side by side...):
That just about says it all, doesn't it. No Josh for me this year... I just haven't put in the miles and especially hill work on the bike I need to. Sigh.

To Josh or Not to Josh...
Monday, August 15, 2011
Yesterday's race left me with serious doubts about doing the Josh Billings Runaground this year. The Josh starts with a tough 27 mile ride - lots of climbing, from what I remember from 1998 - followed by a 5 mile paddle around the Stockbridge Bowl (flat water, but sometimes it can get pretty windy) and finishing with a 6 mile run.
The bike course during yesterday's duathlon had a decent amount of climbing, but less than the Josh (from what I recall...) - and it thoroughly chewed me up and spit me out. I just haven't done enough riding in general and especially enough hill work this year, and it really showed.
I'm confident I could finish the Josh... but what took me a little over 4 hours back in 1998 will probably take me over 5 hours this time around... and I'm not sure that's fair to the race folks and especially to Ann (who'd be there to be my "helper".)
Guess I need to get my backside over to MA and ride some of the bike course - and see if it's as bad (or even worse) than I remember...

No Paddling Saturday...
Thursday, April 28, 2011
Recently Ann and I discussed how high and fast the Genesee River was flowing through Genesee Valley Park and wondered about the paddling portion of this Saturday's Flower City River Challenge Triathlon - today I got the answer, which is the paddle leg has been replaced by a 2nd running leg (so everyone is now doing a duathlon.) I'm not at all surprised - Yellowjacket Racing is always very concerned about athlete safety and it's clear that being on the river this weekend would be very unsafe. Not only is the water flowing almost 6 times faster than it was last year (11300 cfs compared to 1800 cfs) but there is also a good deal of debris moving in the water as well. As much as I enjoy the change of pace that the paddle leg offers, I really didn't want to be out on the water in current conditions, so I won't miss the paddle at all. And it has suddenly become a lot easier to prep for the race - I no longer need to mount the roof rack and load up the kayak and associated gear, drop all that off before parking the car, and then load it all back up after the race. All things considered, a very positive development on my end of things!

Quite literally. There were so many participants between all the races going on yesterday at Portage Lakes that they weren't able to post results immediately afterwards... but they've got them up today and -
I took 1st place in my division!

OK, time for the full disclosure... sometimes it doesn't matter if you're slow and fat if you pick your race carefully. Apparently Olympic Distance du isn't all that popular, because only 25 people actually competed (out of somewhere around 900 spread out over all the tris and dus yesterday)... and I came in 24th out of those 25. I also signed up for an age group - Over 40 Clydesdale 220+lbs - which I knew was unlikely to have many (if any!) other participants. So yes, I came in 1st out of a group of one fat old guy... though the results do show that had I signed up for my age group (45-49) I would have taken that too, since apparently I was the only guy in that group running and riding yesterday.
But you know what. I don't care. I drove for 9 hours round trip (17 from Albany) to compete yesterday and I busted my butt to finish the race. I rode fairly well (for me), made it through the run uninjured, and paced myself well enough that I didn't end up having to crawl the last couple of miles and even managed to break 3 1/2 hours. And in the process I got my first ever first place finish... I think I've earned the right to enjoy it for a bit, before I go on to get my butt kicked in the races coming up next weekend... and all the weekends after that too.

Another Shot at a Longer Du
Wednesday, September 8, 2010
... and in Ohio to boot... though this time in Akron, which is quite a bit closer to Rochester. Still a lot of driving that weekend, but 8-9 hours less than the round trip to Heuston Woods back in August.
So Sept. 18 I'll be heading to Akron for the Portage Lakes Olympic Distance Duathlon. And afterwards I'll make a rather long drive back to Albany so I can be at work Monday morning. Wahoo...
Thinking about it, while this will be the longest du I've ever done, it's actually not that much longer than the Rochester Autumn Classic F1, which I've done 5 times now... just an additional 3 miles of running and 5 miles of riding. Hmm... looks like I'll have to move up to a Half Iron du (!) if I ever want to go significantly longer... and I'm definitely not going to be ready for that challenge anytime soon.

Tough Decision...
Friday, August 27, 2010
Everything was looking good for this weekend's Hueston Woods Du in Ohio... the weather looks to be excellent (especially compared to last Sunday!) and both the bike and I seem ready to finish respectably (for me, anyway.)
Unfortunately, as the day progressed and I thought about it more and more... I decided not to go. I really want to do the race, for a bunch of reasons - it would be the longest du I've ever tackled, it's in a place I've never been, and it looks like the field for the Olympic Distance is fairly small. But the thought of spending 17+ hours driving this weekend, when I could be doing something fun with Ann on the last weekend before work starts back up (I don't count Labor Day weekend, since she always goes camping then) - in the end, that just seemed like too much.
Maybe next year I can schedule things differently and actually make it an extended trip to Ohio and visit a bunch of parks while I'm there... but this year I think it's going to have to be another DNS.
Sigh.
On the bright side... we'll have an entire weekend with what's supposed to be fantastic weather to get outside and do some fun stuff. Could be a whole lot worse...!

25.9 Mile Ride on the Mohawk Hudson Bike Path
Wednesday, August 18, 2010
Many days I head out and pause a lot to take pictures... but every once in a while it feels better to just put my head down and grind out some miles with minimal stops. Today was one of the latter days, though I did get a few shots of egrets, herons, and one of the Mohawk River eagles...
I started out heading west to the base of the old landfill, then back east all the way to the end of the bike path in Cohoes (where several miles of roads connect it to the trail through the Corning Preserve.) It's been quite a while since I rode east of Manor Ave in Cohoes, partly because the path really isn't all that interesting there (it mainly runs along backyards and through some sections of Cohoes that are a bit run down) and partly because while the ride out is a sweet downhill, it's a climb all the way back to the tunnel under rte 9, just east of the Colonie Mohawk River Park. Well, apparently this is my week for riding out-and-backs that involve long climbs on the way back...
My legs were definitely feeling the last few days of running and riding, though I did keep up a decent pace and rode one of my longer distances this summer (sad, very sad.) I briefly considered riding out to Lock 7 Rd one more time to end up with close to 30 miles for today... very briefly, since I was hungry and tired.
Now all I've got to do in a week and a half is ride something like this distance... after running a 5k... and then run a 10k... at this point I'm confident I'll finish Hueston Woods, but I have a feeling the end isn't going to be pretty... not that it ever is.

REBUILDING DISTANCE 2010 - Race #20
Discover Presque IsleDuathlon Drowned Rat-athlon
Sunday, July 25, 2010
Last year it was sunny during the race but then rained all afternoon while we were trying to have fun in the park. This year the rain started right around when we arrived... and didn't let up until we'd left to find some warm filling food for lunch.

The start of the race was delayed by about half an hour while a thunderstorm blew through, with pretty heavy rain at times. Fortunately it let up enough for the race to get going... it would have been more than a bit annoying if they'd had to cancel. Just before we started running the first leg, down to the Perry Monument and back, I tucked the rain jacket away in my jersey pocket, thinking I might need it later. But I realized pretty quickly that I was generating enough heat that I'd be fine, and left it in the transition area for the rest of the race.

Took it easy on the first run but managed to pass half a dozen other runners, which felt good... I may not be back to running longer distances yet but I've regained enough that I can push the short stuff a bit more. The rain stayed a light drizzle, which was actually more pleasant than the heat and sun we had for the last two years.

Of course riding a bike in the rain for almost an hour isn't much fun... thankfully the roads in the park are in great condition with few holes. The amount of rain varied... there were a couple of points where it came down pretty hard and the wind was blowing, gah! And most of the trip back to Beach 11 was through an inch or so of water on the road... I thought I pushed pretty hard but my time was actually comparable to last year, and a few minutes slower than back in 2008. Still, for the weather conditions I guess I did pretty well (for me.) I was reminded that 12 1/2 miles of almost flat terrain is actually harder in some ways than a rolling course, because you never get a break. And after just about 90 minutes in the rain I was ready to be done.

Except of course I had the final run, during which the dark clouds gathered and dumped the heaviest rain of the morning on us... at times it was hard to make out the other runners on the path as much more than blurry outlines. But I definitely ran better than I would have in the heat and humidity... I was definitely motivated both the try and break 2 hours and get done as quickly as possible in hopes of finally changing into some dry clothes!

Came across the finish in 1 hr 59 min 20 sec... not a PR but substantially better than last year, when I'd torn up my knee a little over a month before the race. I'm glad I stuck it out - this was one of the wettest races I've done, but I suspect some of my trail experiences helped... the rain didn't throw me off my game nearly as much as it seemed it did for some of the other folks, rather it probably helped me run the 3rd leg faster than I would have otherwise. I definitely need to wear lighter shorts for du's - ended up with some painful chafing from running in wet heavy cycling shorts, which won't me much fun for a few days. Ann was a really good sport about sitting in the car for a 5 hour round trip and getting dragged out of bed to be at the park by 6:20 AM, then hanging around in the rain for three hours... she definitely earned her post-race brunch. And I'm hoping none of the other du's I do this year will be as wet as this one was!

REBUILDING DISTANCE 2010 - Race #9
Rochester Spring Classic F1 Duathlon
Saturday, May 22, 2010
Wow. This was my 6th year of doing the Spring Classic Du... it's amazing how time flies.
Tough race today. Partially due to the heat (which was more late June than late May) and partially due to my being tired from a very long week and not in the shape I wish I was in right now.
Surprisingly, the rides went well... probably because I know the course really well at this point and am getting better at pacing myself. One thing I did notice is my climbing isn't very strong this year. Usually I pass people on the climbs, this year I was making up time on the descents and the flats.
My runs were definitely weak this time around... I was on the slow side during the 1st 2 miler and then even slower for the 1 mile and 2 mile legs later in the race. I guess I just haven't built up the distance reserves that let me hammer out shorter runs like this. Hopefully I can do better in the fall.
All in all, my finish was slower than I'd hoped for, a little over 2 hr 26 min... but when I checked previous years that turned out to be a fairly average time for me, so I guess I don't have too much to be disappointed about.
As always, the folks at Yellowjacket Racing and all the volunteers were fantastic. One of the biggest reasons I keep coming back to this race (besides the fact that it was the first duathlon I ever did and the Mendon area is beautiful in late May) is the incredibly positive attitude there. I like the fact that no matter how long it takes me to finish I always feel like I'm just as important to the folks organizing the race as the faster people are... this is one of the few races I attend that will actually hold off announcing the various winners until after everyone has finished, which is pretty cool of them. And it's why I expect to be back next May for a 7th go around the Spring Classic Du course.

The Wild & Wacky World of Snowshoe Racing in the Northeast, Part 2 -
Non-series Snowshoe Races & Winter Multisport
Tuesday, November 18, 2008
Yesterday I wrote about several snowshoe racing series in the northeast... there are some great individual races included in those series, but I'm going to resist the temptation to write about them here. (Though I may do a short description of the races I've done in the WMAC series at a later date...) Today I'll concentrate in individual races that aren't part of a series and also a bit of winter multisport (which thankfully does not include swimming!)
Roads Are Poison Snowshoe Races
The Roads Are Poison snowshoe races in western NY are organized by Mort Nace and Tim Ratowski, co-founders of two of the more extreme trail events in that area (the Muddy Sneaker 20k and Out of Bounds Half Marathon.) They currently offer four races - the Frozen Assets 5k and the Mendon Winterfest 10k in January, and the Cast a Shadow 6 hr and Mountaintop 6k in February. I've run the first two and had a lot of fun (in a sick torturous kind of way!) Lots of positive attitude and they try to make it fun for everyone. More info can be found at the Roads Are Poison site; links to info about the individual races can be found there as well.
Yellowjacket Racing Snowshoe Races
OK, it's only one race, but the folks at Yellowjacket are great so it's well worth mentioning - the Lake Effect Snowshoe Festival. This was a snowshoe duathlon for the first two years (snowshoe - mountain bike - snowshoe) but last year it turned into a snowshoe only event, I suspect because the logistics of doing a duathlon at that time of the year were simply too difficult. An incredible variety of distances are offered, both sprint (100, 200, 400, and 1500 m) and longer (2, 4, and 13 mile.) The distance course is a lot of fun, and really you can't go wrong with a Yellowjacket event. Last year I passed on this to run the Curly's Record Run race in Pittsfield, MA; I'll probably decide which one I'm doing this year based on where there's snow.
Peak Races Snowshoe Races
Peak Races offers a snowshoe marathon, half marathon, and 6.5 mile "fun run" in early March. The longer races are multiple loops of the 6.5 mile course, which can best be described as challenging. There are long steep climbs (1800' total per loop) and also some long steep descents. Great positive attitude and support from all the race staff. The race fee is hefty for a snowshoe event (where typical fees run between $5 and $20) but includes a unique finisher's award (last year it was a framing hammer with the race logo) and a post-race lobster dinner with a video of race highlights. More info about the races can be found here. I'm still undecided if I want to try this one again this season... on the one hand I'd like to actually complete the half marathon, but it's a lot of money (especially when you factor in needing to get a room for the night before the race.)
Miscellaneous Races
This will be the 4th year for the mid-January Hoffman's Notch Wilderness Challenge 10k at Schroon Lake... I've never run it but by all accounts it's a fun challenging course. The Empire State Snowshoe Racing Association lists numerous races around NYS during the winter, many of them set up as qualifying events for the Empire State Winter Games snowshoe events. The United States Snowshoe Association also has a calendar of races, including a regional calendar for the northeast, which are used as qualifiers for the US National Snowshoe Championships, held this year in March outside of Portland, OR.
Winter Multisport
Winter multisport seems to have been going for a while out west but was introduced to the Northeast in just the last couple of years, first via Yellowjacket Racing's Lake Effect Snowshoe Duathlon (now a purely snowshoe event.) More recently a group near Boston has organized the New England Winter Multisport series, three races which combine running (no snowshoes), mountain biking, and XC skiing. Given the ever-increasing popularity of multisport and winter racing, I would be surprised if the selection of winter multisport races doesn't grow over the coming years.

LOOKING BACK - RACES 2006
Sunday, December 31, 2006
This was an ambitious year for me, albeit one that didn't end the way I was hoping.
The year started out with the (no) snowshoe season - out of all of the races I signed up for/planned to do, only Savoy had enough snow to actually snowshoe. Numerous races were cancelled or postponed to dates when I couldn't make them, and the ones I did get to ended up being trail races. I did get to do my first winter duathlon, though... riding for an hour in the cold, cold rain seemed a bit crazy at the time and still does.
My first trail race of the season was the Northern Nipmuck, which started a pattern of my entering distance trail races that turned out to be torturous. Northern Nipmuck, the Nipmuck marathon (where I dropped out after 19.75 miles) and the Greylock Half Marathon were all well worth doing but took forever and hurt like heck. On the plus side, the shorter races were a lot of fun - I really enjoyed doing the Spring Classic Duathlon in Rochester (despite the distinctly un-spring-like weather), the Yellowjacket Powerbar trail race (also at Mendon) and the Summer Solstice Run down at Minnewaska State Park. Planned for the 25k at the Finger Lakes Fifties (and missed it!) and went out too fast at Indian Ladder, as always (maybe next year...!) Forge the Gorgeous was one of the most scenic races of the summer, and Race the Train was probably the most unusual race of the year, and also a lot of fun, in a summer spent preparing for 2 marathons and a 50k in the fall...
Of course, then came The Crash, and I went from trying to run long distances to trying to run ANY distance. Missed Savoy, missed the Greylock Road Race, missed the Adirondack Marathon. But six weeks after The Crash I hobbled my way through the Rochester Autumn Classic Duathlon with a smile on my face. Missed a few more races in October (including the Black Diamond Off Road Duathlon) but entered the Hairy Gorilla Trail Half Marathon at the last minute and finished, earning not one but two gorilla finishing awards! A couple of weeks later I ran one loop of the Mendon Trail 50k I'd been contemplating running earlier in the year and had a great run - but doing five loops of that will definitely be tough! Wrapped up with a good run at the RT Turkey Run 5 Miler (more Mendon!) and a very tough Gail's Trail Run on a gorgeous day on the Leatherman's Loop course down in Westchester.
So not the year I was hoping for, and some of my times were definitely much longer than I'd planned on - but I also ran some races in what I would consider very fast times (for me.) I'm looking forward to doing some of these races again next year, and perhaps improving. And I definitely want to finish some marathons! (And maybe, just maybe, become an ultramarathoner!) Putting in some greater distances on my bike would also be a big plus.
So the tally for 2006 is - 17 races for a total of 3 miles/1 hour of snowshoe races, 136.6 miles/33 hrs 8 minutes of running races, and 52.4 miles/4 hrs 8 minutes of bike racing, in 3 states (New York, Massachusetts, and Connecticut.) Not bad, all things considered... not bad at all.

WHY RACE?
Wednesday, December 13, 2006
Or, more accurately, what I usually hear is some version of "If you know you're going to come in last or close to last, why would you pay money, get up in the middle of the night, and drive all over creation to do a race?" Often the question is unspoken, but I can tell it's there when someone asks how I did in a particular race, I mention that I came in at the end or toward the end of the field, and they give me a look that says they question my sanity.
I suppose in an achievement-oriented society, it's a question that has to be asked. Of course, there are different kinds of achievements - while my 4 hr 20 min marathon finish in 1997 was a good two hours behind the top runners, most folks still felt that my running 26.2 miles was a significant achievement, particularly when I had just started running 4 months before. At one point I even made a practice of pointing out to people that I'm slow, so I have to aim for doing long distances and difficult courses where the achievement is found just in finishing. Of course, back then I did at most 2 or 3 races a year...
So why DO I pay good money, get up in the middle of the night, and drive all over creation to do a race?

Of course, back then I did at most 2 or 3 races a year...
So why DO I pay good money, get up in the middle of the night, and drive all over creation to do a race?
- Racing forces me to get out and train. As someone who is inherently lazy, knowing I have a race coming up motivates me to put in the time and distance needed so that I'll be able to do well, whether that takes the form of a fast (for me) run or a long distance.
- Racing gives me an opportunity to push myself. When I'm running against the clock and against other runners, I'll typically run harder than when I'm out running by myself. Not to mention the additional adrenaline boost of bring in a race...
- Racing gives me a reason to go to cool places to run and ride. I would have a hard time justifying driving for 2 hours to run 6 miles in a really gorgeous park or on a really challenging course. But doing a race there makes it a special occasion. I've discovered some of the coolest places I know (like Minnewaska State Park) because of doing a race there.
- Racing gives me a feeling of accomplishment. I know it doesn't make total sense, but running a half marathon race is different from going out and running a 13 mile training run. Having people cheering for me as I cross a finish line (or even having my name announced, as has happened once or twice) is a unique feeling... almost like I'm a real athlete!
- Racing allows me to meet other people who are as crazy as I am (or even crazier!) In most of the races I've done, the vast majority of people have been very positive. I don't run and ride as a social activity... actually, much of my running and riding is designed to get me away from aggravating people! But it is also nice to occasionally have contact with folks who have a good time doing the same sorts of crazy things I do.
- Racing is fun. Sometimes it's "that was a great run!" fun, sometimes it's "that was brutal - what a great course!" fun, and sometimes it's "boy am I glad THAT'S over!" fun. Sometimes it's "cool, I'm going to beat this person to the finish" fun and sometimes it's "the only folks left are the ones manning the finish" fun. But overall doing races is something I enjoy.
I guess the bottom line is, for me running isn't the end product and it's not as much about achievement as it is about the journey. Doing races has become a part of that journey for me, and it will continue to be a part until they decide I'm too slow and ask me to stop!

Well, it was fairly clear on the way out to Rochester that this would NOT be a snowshoe event. While we had 6 inches of snow in Albany (and I managed to get in two nights of snowshoe running this past week, woohoo!) the snow vanished on the way out west AND the forecast was calling for 40 degree weather and rain on Sunday.
The rain started a bit before lunchtime and, naturally, kicked in full force right around when I arrived at Webster Park for the race. Checked in, got my goodies, and wheeled the bike over to the transition area. Then I spent 20 minutes sitting in the car trying to remain somewhat dry. Not that there was a whole lot of advantage to that… within minutes of getting out of the car for the pre-race briefing we were all drenched, and I at least stayed drenched for the next 2 ½ hours.

The race consisted of a 2 mile trail run, then two 6.2 mile biking loops, and wrapped up with a 2nd 2 mile trail run. It was clear right from the start that the run was going to be very wet and very muddy… within my first few steps the mud tried to pull one of my shoes off (something which happened repeatedly during the runs!) We ran paths through the fields and then went into the woods – and things got pretty cool. Lots of up and down, two stream crossings, multiple areas where trails had become streams… 2 miles of wet, squishy, slippery, muddy fun. Couldn’t make great time – I had to keep taking different sections slow so I wouldn’t blow out a knee – but I had a good time running through the mud under the pine trees!

The riding was less fun… cold, wet, cold, hilly, cold… the route took us through the residential area surrounding the park and wasn’t terribly scenic or interesting in the rain. I had the option of stopping the ride after the first 6.2 mile loop and briefly considered it (my feet were getting pretty cold and the ride was getting a bit miserable) but I signed up to do the full du and by golly that’s what I decided to do. And my feet were even colder by the time I got off that bike…

As always my legs didn’t work terribly well when I started the 2nd run, but at least running warmed me back up. Of course, after almost 90 minutes on the course the trails were even more flooded (and having all the other runners go through ahead of me didn’t help… the trails were pretty churned up.) So the 2nd run took me a little longer… but after 1 hr 51 minutes I was the last person to cross the finish line (not long after a guy who did the race with his arm in a sling… OK, that was a little bit demoralizing.) A little over 20 minutes for the first run (10 minute miles - pretty darn good!), 61 minutes for the bike (not bad for 12.4 miles up and down hills on my heavy mountain bike) and then 25 minutes for the last run (not awful, considering that my legs took half a mile to get into running again and the course was a slippery mess!)

The race photographer from All Ages Photography did get pictures of me starting the first run, riding, and crossing the finish line – smiling at times (or was that a grimace) and bearing a remarkable resemblance to a drowned rat.
Originally I was going to pass on taking pictures at this one, but the running course was cool enough that I really wanted to get some shots of it… so after I packed up my bike I changed into a dry shirt and jacket and ran the course again, this time with my waterproof camera in hand. (Yes, you read that right. I ran the course again. Just to take pictures.) Later in the week I’ll get the pictures developed and post the good ones, along with the "official" race photos once I order them.
Of course, I can't wrap this up without saying how great the folks from Fleet Feet Sports and Yellowjacket Racing are... I've been very impressed at all three races I've done with them. All of the volunteers are fantastic (I don't know that I would have wanted to stand in the pouring rain for an hour yesterday directing riders at the turns!) and everyone involved is very encouraging - something which is especially nice for us "back of the pack" athletes. I definitely plan on doing more races with these folks, and I would say that anyone looking to try a duathlon cannot go wrong choosing to try one of Yellowjacket's events.

If nothing else, these weekends should be teaching me to be flexible in my planning, since things have rarely gone off the way I expected them to.
This weekend I set a new record for earliest rising to get to a race - 2 AM Saturday morning with a departure (from Albany) time of 4 AM to reach Victor (just east of Rochester) by 8 AM. The original plan was to drive out to Rochester Friday night. Unfortunately, this has been the week from you-know-where, sleep-wise, and Friday it became very clear that I WAS NOT driving out that night... I would have fallen asleep while driving. So instead I went to sleep at 7 PM and got up at 2 AM.
(FYI there's very little traffic on the Thruway at 4 AM on a Saturday morning.)
About 45 minutes out from Victor, the rain started. And stayed. I believe the announcer said it was 42 degrees while we were waiting to start. Cold and wet. What fun. I went with the "freeze my butt off" approach and took off my sweatpants and windbreaker before the start. Needless to say the bike leg was a little chilly.
For once no one said anything about my knee braces! BUT I did get a new comment - twice I heard variations on "You came all the way from Albany to do this race?" I guess it was mostly locals at this one.
So after the usual pre-race stuff (some of which involved the really nice race director talking way too much about the course - I kept wanting to holler out "We're freezing our butts off! Just start this thing so we can run!"), off we went on a 2 mile run through Fishers park. First on muddy trails through the woods and then on a loop around a field. Halfway around the field there was a cub scout pack manning the water station... boy were they enthusiastic. And apparently I made their day by stopping to take their picture. (They thanked me on the 2nd running leg.)

Anyway, back into the woods and back the way we came... finished the run without popping the ol' knee, and hopped on my bike. I then spent a while cursing out the race director, who had said the bike sections were almost entirely flat, because the Auburn trail sure seemed like it was a long gradual uphill heading in that direction. (But then again, on the way back it ALSO seemed uphill, so my "up/down" sensors may have been waterlogged or frozen. Maybe it was just that my legs didn't want to push my heavy ATB after the run.) After a few miles on the Auburn trail (an old railbed turned rec trail) we headed off into another park, this time for a muddy ride on a dirt road and around a field.

(Maybe I should change my alias from "jedi_turtle" to "muddy_turtle"... hopefully the next two races will be dry!)
.jpg)
Then it was back out the Auburn trail to the Lehigh trail (another converted railbed) and a short road stretch. I don't know who ordered the headwind for the last mile - that made the last bit of biking really tough!
After that it was back for another round of the trails in the park, except that they hurt more 2nd time around and it was raining harder, so things were getting pretty slippery. But I pushed through to the end, finishing in a pretty decent 1 hr 22 min. (I was expecting more like 90-100 minutes, but apparently I made good time on the bike.) All the volunteers were really nice - they had an amazing number of people out on the course (and that wasn't including all the police, firemen, and EMTs they had out there.) Afterwards I found someone to snap a picture of me - wet but done!

AND since I was already wet, I rode part of the bike course again to take pictures of it... I'll post them on webshots later this week (as well as the pictures I took during my first loop through the running course.)

Now I just have to see if I can stay awake until Ann gets back from Utica...
Next week - the Hairy Gorilla Half Marathon in (grumble) Thacher Park. Apparently, the volunteers will be in costume (since Halloween is the next day) and the finish area will be set up to look like a graveyard (that would be much more appropriate if it was an ultramarathon... or that killer race I did two weeks ago... or the Greylock Half Century ride!) The director's e-mail also said something to the effect that runners should keep their eyes open, because there might be animals in the woods attacking them - of course, if anyone in an animal costume attacks me, THEY might be the ones in for a surprise... (I won't wear the AMAI logo at this one... but I am considering running with an escrima stick strapped to my back. Or maybe my cane... that could always come in handy if I pop my knee, too!)
JMH
P.S. As I was riding my bike in the Pine Bush Thursday night, I had a wacky idea for a ninth strenuous weekend which would get me my long run through the Pine Bush... I have to calculate some distances though and see if it's doable (ie. could I do it in under 3 1/2 hours.)

A couple of observations, after having done this sort of thing for four weekends in a row…
(1) Getting up at 4 or 5 AM on a weekend morning to go to a race is truly insane. Basically it means that you are not only getting up at a ridiculous hour on a day when normal people sleep in a bit, but you’re paying someone else for the privilege to do so. Races that are an hour or more away double the insanity.
(2) In the spring and early summer I was finishing in the back half of the race field. Now I’m finishing at the very end or close to the very end. So either the other slow people have given up races by autumn, or they’ve gotten much faster during the summer. (I don't think I've slowed down significantly...)
(3) Run with two knee braces on and people will tell you that you’re doing something incredible, even if you tell them your knees have been like this for years and you do this all the time. At least they're not trying to give me an award for it...
(4) Running the same loop again and again drives me freakin' crazy. By the third running leg I was REALLY tired of the two hills on the course. (There’s a 50 K trail run in the same park in November, consisting of five 10 K loops. While I would like to do a trail 50 K someday, I suspect that one would push me over the edge. Of course, now I've jinxed myself and will probably end up doing it next year or something.)
Moving onward…
One of the pluses to racing in the fall is the temperature change during the morning… Mendon Park was very pretty as the dew evaporated and the mist drifted up through the sunlight. A great feature of being a trail runner - the races I go to are in wonderful wild places. The October ones should be great as the leaves start changing. It’s also nice to start out a bit chilly and warm up as things proceed, instead of dripping with sweat from the moment you get out of bed.

Got to Mendon, checked in, and unloaded my 1970’s Yugo of a bike so that it could take its place on the racks with all the bike versions of Corvettes and Camaros. Geared up, strapped my knees into place, and walked around in my 1970’s Yugo of a body taking pictures while not looking too much at all the human versions of Corvettes and Camaros. Waited for things to begin and then off we went. 2 mile run, started out at the back and stayed there. Hopped on the bike and zipped off, demon biker that I am.
.jpg)
One of the rules of racing is don’t use equipment you haven’t trained with before the race. So I of course rode a bike that I’d only gotten back on the road three weeks ago. It’s much lighter than my other bike, which is a plus. But something wasn’t adjusted quite right, and I had never done any sprinting on this bike (dumb, dumb, dumb) so I found myself with muscles cramping that I don’t typically notice while riding. But I made good time and even passed a couple of people. Hit close to 30 mph going down one hill (actually hit 31.4 mph going down the same hill on the 2nd loop. Wahoo!) Of course it was interesting as I came to the finish of that leg – runners were completing the 2nd running leg as I came in. The same thing happened in reverse as I was completing the 2nd running leg, as riders finishing their 2nd riding leg flew by me. Dang those guys are fast.
.jpg)
Probably the toughest thing about a race like this is the constant transition from running to biking to running… I’m just getting warmed up after 2 miles, and then it’s time to ride! The ride-to-run transition was definitely the toughest for me… it took almost half a mile before my legs really felt like they were working again.

Anyway, I plugged away at it and after 2 hrs and 34 minutes crossed the finish line. There were a few people clapping and cheering, I think because that meant they could finally wrap up and do the awards. (The race organizers get points in my book for not doing awards until everyone had finished… I’ve been in some races where that wasn’t the case, and I find it annoying to finish and find out that the awards have already been done – seems to be making a statement about the relative importance of fast and slow people.) Ann showed up somewhat before the end of the 2nd bike leg and took some pictures of me finishing the last two parts (2nd bike, 3rd run) – I was also photographed by the “official” race photographer several times, so I may have some pics to post of this one at some point.
.jpg)
Of course, one of the reasons I did this race was to see if I’d improved since spring… a tough comparison, since I’m no longer running all out (don’t feel like getting hurt!), I switched bikes, and there’s an extra mile in this race. But, crunching the numbers, I found that my running time in the spring averaged out to 11.7 minute miles, and this time to… 11.7 min miles. An improvement of sorts, since in the spring I was pushing as hard as I possibly could and here I wasn’t. My riding averaged at 14.1 mph in the spring, and 14.7 mph here. Again, not a bad improvement, especially considering I concentrated on distance riding this summer, not speed. So I’m fairly pleased with the results overall, even if I’m becoming the champion of the back-of-the-pack. I guess somebody has to stop and thank the volunteers and cross the finish line with a smile on their face.
JMH
Next up: the Monroe Dunbar Brook 10.5 mile trail run in Monroe, MA – if the weather predictions are at all reliable, we may be freezing our backsides off (especially during the knee-deep stream crossing at mile 9!) Then I get a week “off” (no races) to gear up for the final three – an offroad duathlon, a trail half marathon, and a trail 20K.
Halfway there, race-wise... next weekend marks the half-way point, time wise. Hopefully the best is yet to come!

THE SHORT VERSION:
I finished, 92nd out of 93, in 2:23:36 (so I came in at under 2 1/2 hrs, which was my absolute goal, but not at 2:10, which was my standard of perfection ie. 10 min miles running and 15 mph riding.) And I was right... it hurt... (in other words, fun in a bizarre masochistic way.)
THE LONG VERSION:
As always, couldn't sleep the night before a race (why I get nervous, when I'm not actually competing against the other participants, I'll never understand.) So I fell asleep around 2:30-3 in the morning and the alarm went off at 5:30. Wahoo.

Got over the the park at 7:30, picked up my packet, and got my bike and gear stowed in the transition area. Also attached a timing chip to my ankle via a velcro band... Martha Stewart, eat your heart out! Then I hung around for 45 minutes waiting for the race to start... walked down to the lake and took some pictures... walked around and marvelled at the fact that many of the bikes are probably worth more than my car is at this point in its 271,000 mile life... looked at all the skinny ripped athletes and both me and my bike felt out of place, old clunkers that we are. :-) Guess it's good that there are people like me around the make the serious athletes and the biomechanically blessed look even better...

After that, it was just a race, albeit one where I had to keep changing physical and mental gears. Run for 21 minutes (course wasn't too bad, but a couple of sadistic hills and a lot of running on grass... I HATE running on grass, you can never tell what the footing will be), then bike for 42 min (lots o' hills, but also a couple of "woo hoo" downhills, and the part in the park was pretty), then run again (for 13 minutes... yup, it was starting to hurt, and there were still 2 legs to go, so I couldn't just say the heck with it and cut loose), then ride again for 43 minutes (I'd swear they snuck in more hills! But no more biking after that, so I pushed all out) and finally run for 24 minutes. (Well... I walked all the hills. No juice left in the legs for running uphill. I did go all out on the level sections, not that all out was all that fast at that point.) Needed the guys at the finish line to remove my ankle timing gizmo... somehow velcro was beyond me at that point.

The last two legs I thanked all the monitors out on the course, shook the hand of one guy who I saw a whopping five times during the runs and thanked him, and joked around a bit with most of them to pretend I still had a sense of humor about the whole thing. Really, those guys have the most boring job in the world. Wait around for 2 1/2 hours for people to come by so you can either hand them water or point which direction they should go. Exciting...

Legs are still tired (big surprise) and I popped my right knee about 1/4 mile from the finish line during the last run, so that's griping like crazy right now. Guess it doesn't bounce back overnight like it did before I blew it out a year and a half ago. Stayed awake through the wedding Ann and I went to Saturday afternoon, as well as the reception, though I did fall asleep for half an hour on the ride home... Ann says she thinks that's why my neck is killing me today, I think maybe I fell asleep in some strange position and then slept like a rock last night, putting a serious kink in it... so a sore knee and a literal pain in the neck are the two aftereffects.
So the big question is...
will I do the fall classic (2 mi/10 mi/2 mi/10 mi/2 mi) to see if I've improved over the summer?
Maybe... the course isn't all that interesting, and it's a lot of repeating loops, which I get bored with very quickly. If I do decide to do this again, I suspect that will be it... I don't see this becoming something I want to do over and over like Indian Ladder or Leatherman's Loop. But it might be interesting to do the one in September and see if I've improved. Have to see what else is going on around that time... there are one or two other running or biking events in September I might want to try, and they may prove more interesting than answering the whether or not I can outdo myself.

Oh, well. If you've survived the long version and all my ramblings, hope you found something of interest. The next race for the lone member of the AMAI Trailrunning Turtles team is the Summer Solstice 14K down in Minnewaska Park near New Paltz, 3rd week of June... unless I go over the Greylock the Sunday before and do the Greylock Trails 5K. Anyway, Summer Solstice is a definite, Greylock a maybe, and more rambling race reports are assured.
