... well, lots of things, actually, but the particular thing I was thinking of this evening was a race I ran back in 2005, the Jordan Alpine Classic.

Here's the description from the race page, way back then -

If you want a real challenge in the fall and don't mind getting muddy and wet, run the Alpine Classic at the Jordan Fall Festival. It's an endurance test. After the traditional cannon start, runners climb over steep hills, maneuver through woods and fields, and wade across a stream. They even climb a 12-foot vertical bank using a 1-inch thick rope. Mid-way in the race, the course goes down a very steep path, similar to an expert ski trail. It is recommended by some you don't run this part, but rather just sit down and slide. The race ends at the Jordan Fall Festival grounds near the original Erie Canal towpath.

The Alpine Classic started out as part of the Elbridge Country Fair, running from 1980 until the fair closed down in 1992. Two years later it was ressurected as part of the Jordan Fall Festival, which is how I ran it in 2005. I missed it the following year, and I believe it vanished from the Festival schedule in 2007, apparently due to needing an RD. A version of the race reappeared in 2009 - with a good deal more road running and some not nearly as scenic trail segments - it was a nice run, but not the blast that I remember from the 2005 course. Since then it has been gone from the schedule, I suspect for good.

I found myself thinking about the Alpine Classic tonight because I drove through Jordan on my way home, not realizing that it was the weekend of the Fall Festival - while everything had wrapped up by the time I was there, it still brought back good memories of the race back in 2005. (Yes... an 8.5 mile run up and down muddy hills in the rain provides good memories. Go figure...)

When the alarm went off this morning I realzed that I'm very much out of practice when it comes to getting up and heading off to a race... it's been over a month since the last one I did! I was briefly tempted to crawl back into bed like I did last year, but fortunately I reminded myself of how much I regretted skipping other races this year - and how many I had to miss over the past month due to either injury or lack of a car - and kept myself on track to getting my gear together so I could head out the door and get on the road to Cross River, NY down in Westchester County.







The first part of the drive down was in the dark, but as the sun came up I was treated to the sight of all the trees along the Taconic Parkway covered in snow... very pretty! Unlike two years ago, the drive down was uneventful (this year the snow hit the day before!) and I pulled into the Ward Pound Ridge Reservation with plenty of time to check in and figure out what I wanted to wear. Went through several combinations of tops, but finally settled on two long-sleeved shirts with a jacket just in case (and the expectation that I'd probably end up wishing I'd skipped the jacket...)

The start was delayed while a few folks came in at the last minute, then we gathered in the corner of the parking lot and the RD talked for a bit about why the run was started (in memory of the wife of the Team Mossman swim coach who died of pancreatic cancer) and also mentioned other folks who'd lost their fight with the disease this past year. Tony Godina, RD emeritus of the Leatherman's Loop, said a few things about the course... and then it was time to go!









As I expected the group disappeared pretty quickly... I'm slow at the best of times and I had already decided not to push it today, given the state of my knee. Stopped a short ways in to tie my jacket around my waist (hate it when I'm right) and generally took it easy, walking when I needed to and stopping to snap photos whenever I wanted. The woods were absolutely gorgeous - a light layer of snow everywhere and blue sunny skies above. Made my way through the woods up and down hills to the first stream crossing. Getting in without jamming my knee wasn't easy; I ended up sitting down on the bank to lower my feet into the water, which was about knee deep and, no surprise, cold (but not stunningly so - maybe I'm finally at the point where I know what to expect.) Getting out on the far side was tricky - the big rock going up to the back was very slippery, and I didn't really want to end up getting dunked. But eventually I made it and headed off down the trail running along the stream.









Lots of varied terrain after that, and lots of mud close to the stream - guess that's one of the disadvantages to all the warm weather we've had, the mud isn't frozen yet. Eventually passed through the picnic area at the end of the open section of the park road, then back along the stream some more. Up hills, down hills, through fields... one of the fun things about the Leatherman's course is that it has a little bit of everything. Eventually the path came out on the closed end of the park road, which offered a short bit of pavement before we headed back into the swamps. This stretch was even trickier than some of the earlier bits, because in many places the path is bounded by bushes and they were all bowed over with the weight of the snow, creating tunnels to run through. Nothing for it but to put my head down and just push on... eventually reached the roughly halfway point - the long, steep climb up the sandy wall of the old quarry. I made my way to the top and took a brief breather, looking forward to somewhat less tricky trails for a while.









The next bit runs through a section of forest sprinkled with lots of cool rock outcrops... and even more hills. Lots of water today too - sections of the trail were more stream than trail. The initial parts were mostly downhill or level, though after a nice stretch of evergreens the trail started climbing again - a fairly long, gradual uphill which took me back over the ridge and down to the stream again. At least I've done this course enough times now that I know there's almost a mile and a half to go at that point... the first few times I ran it I was always disappointed when my memory played false and the path across the field to the second stream crossing wasn't just around the corner.









More climbing, more woods, and another stretch of evergreens, this one in rough shape from a storm that hit there sometime in the past - last of trees down on either side of the trail. Finally I hit the last downhill and came out in the field. Of course, that meant I was almost to the tough stream crossing - the one some folks end up swimming in the spring! I stopped before entering the water to pack my camera in a ziploc bag and secure any gear that might float away, then carefully made my way out into the water. That stream crossing is tricky because the water runs pretty fast and there are a couple of spots where the bottom drops off. Today it wasn't as deep as I'd expected - maybe mid-thigh - but it was running fast enough that every time I lifted a foot the current tried to sweep me off my feet. Took my time crossing and even went back in a little ways so the fellow waiting on the bank (apparently the race time keeper) could take two pictures of me.









From there it was just a limping jog across the field to the remains of the old oak and the finish line. My knee didn't feel too bad, probably because of the dunking in the cold stream. I came in at a little over 1:55, right around where I expected given the state of my knee, and happily under 2 hours, even if only just.

After that it was just a matter of changing clothes - fortunately, just about everyone was gone, so I was able to completely change into dry clothes in the car. Unfortunately, I still haven't put all my gear back in the car, so my towel was sitting at home, but no big deal. Since I don't know when I'll be back to the Res, I decided to explore a bit and drove down the park road to the picnic area I passed through during the run. Clouds were rolling in which unfortunately meant there weren't many nice pictures to be taken, but I did manage to pick up a park brochure and trail map. Then I drove to another picnic area that I'd never been to before, all the while really wishing my knee was in better shape so I could either do some hiking or some more running... the Ward Pound Ridge Reservation is just a very cool place with a lot of trails I still haven't explored, and I definitely missed being able to do so today. But at least I made it to the run and got to spend some time out in the woods on an absolutely beautiful early December day.

AARGH! No Dirt Cheap Stage Race For Me...

And I was really looking forward to running it, even though I was pretty sure it was going to be difficult and probably painful (especially the 11 mile leg on Sunday.)

Unfortunately, my car is currently in the shop, hopefully on its way to being repaired, and when I got to Enterprise tonight to pick up my amazingly cheap rental for the weekend - I found out that they needed a bunch of additional stuff for me to put the rental on my debit card (like a pay stub and a utility bill... what the heck?) And since my filing system alternates between being non-existent and chaos personified, I didn't have a prayer of putting my hands on what they needed before they closed for the night.

So I'm both bummed and ticked off, and right now I'd like to find the jackass who hit my car and kick him up one side of New York State and down the other for the aggravation and expense he's caused me.

Oh, well. Enough grumbling. There will be other races and in the grand scheme of things this is all pretty insignificant, no matter how annoying it is at the time.

I've been getting e-mail updates for the Bobcat Trail Marathon in Ohio, the race I was originally planning to do this weekend. They always leave me feeling a bit bummed, since it sounds like it's going to be a good run.

I had hoped to run the Mendon 10k trail race tomorrow morning - even had my registration changed from the 20k - but I would need to leave at 4:30 AM to get there in time and as the evening progressed it became clear that I would be better off getting a full night's sleep. So I guess I'll have to settle for a run somewhere else tomorrow afternoon, while Ann's working on setting up for one of the fire/ems department festivals.

My plans for next weekend are up in the air, since I don't know right now what my car situation will be (I drop my car off Monday after work so they can start repairing it) but I'm still hoping to make it to the Lil Rhody Runaround the weekend after that. After that it all depends on what's actually scheduled (I still haven't heard if Gail's Trail Run on the Leatherman's course is happening this year) and how my knee is doing.

21.4 Mile Ride at Colonie Mohawk River Park & the Mohawk Hudson Bike Path

Up until a little under a week ago I had planned to spend a big chunk of today down near New Paltz, running the After the Leaves Have Fallen 20k at Minnewaska, one of my all-around favorite places to go. A week of hoping my knee would bounce back quickly (it didn't) followed. A day ago I had changed that plan to going up to Saratoga for the Fall Back 5 Mile trail race at the state park... I've never run that one, so this seemed like a good opportunity to take the lemons of missing Minnewaska and make some lemonade (or maybe some lemon iced tea.) This morning I woke up tired and cranky, so I convinced myself to give my knee a few more days so I could take my bike out today instead.

I mixed things up a bit by parking at the bike path lot across from the entrance to the Colonie Mohawk River Park... I figured that would force me to ride a bit further than I might if I used my usual spot, the Niskayuna Lions Park. To be honest I didn't expect much from today's ride, beyond spending some time outdoors... I know the past few weeks of relative inactivity have taken their toll, and with colder weather moving in there are fewer critters to see.

I started out with a quick loop through the park, down the hill to the edge of the river. Other than squirrels stocking up for the winter and a few ducks on the river, not much to see. From there I headed west, first on the local roads that connect the sections of the bike path separated by the Northway, and then on the bike path itself. I stopped to take some pictures of the mob of pigeons sitting in the sunshine on the Twin Bridges, and must have annoyed a hawk perched nearby, since he screeched and flew off almost directly overhead... unfortunately, I couldn't get him in focus quickly enough to get a picture.

On the bike path I passed a downy woodpecker flitting around looking for food and a mockingbird singing some very pretty songs... I snapped pictures of him for a little while and I don't think I heard him repeat himself even once before he flew off. Spotted a few ducks and a muskrat, but for the most part the river was pretty quiet. I had planned to stop at the base of the Hill... ended up riding to the top instead. It was tougher going than it should be at this point in the season, but I made it.

After taking a short break to catch my breath and drink some Nuun, I headed back down the Hill. Passed several bluebird houses along the way and thought about how they're usually set up in pairs so that if a swallow moves in one, there's still another one for the bluebirds (apparently swallows won't tolerate each other as neighbors) and then next thing I knew, I was looking at bluebirds in the trees alongside the path. None of them sat still long enough for me to get a decent picture, sadly, but it was still good to see them - apparently the attempts to bring their numbers back up are succeeding.

I kept an eye on the trees as I rode, but didn't really see anything unusual until I got back to the Gerbil Wheel... at which point a bald eagle flew almost directly overhead with a fish in his claws! A second or so later another eagle followed, this one completely brown - I'm assuming a juvenile bald eagle. By then I had my camera out in case they came back, and I watched them flying around one another a ways off. I couldn't figure out what they were doing until the first one dropped the fish it was carrying - maybe it stole the fish from the other one? After that they headed back to the river and disappeared. I managed to get one halfway decent photo, but they were still pretty darn cool to watch.

Once I got back to the parking lot, I decided to make one more loop through the park, and headed back down to the river again. Along the way I caught a sweet view of the full moon over the trees. The river was a lot busier this time around, with several flocks of geese out on the water and a few more groups coming in to land while I was there. I watched (and listened to!) them for a while and then decided it was time to call it an evening, heading back up the hill to the car and a few errands I wanted to get done before heading home.
