18.2 Mile Ride on the Mohawk Hudson Bike Path
Monday, August 4, 2008
First the good news... the new BB works great. The slightly larger chainrings mean I'll need to get a feel for which gears are most comfortable for everyday riding, but that's no big deal. And some of that may have been my legs being tired from the past weekend of trail races.
Now the bad news... I was still getting the squeal (actually, it was even worse by the time I was done) so it must be the pedals. I'll try working on them tonight but I think it's time to invest in a new set... not that I can complain since I've ridden on these since 1996 or so, and I didn't pay much for them to begin with.
It was a good evening for a ride... cool and sunny with a stiff breeze, and not a lot of people on the bike path. I rode out to the base of the old Niskayuna landfill, and then over to Colonie Town Park (now called Colonie Mohawk River Park.) On my way over to the park I saw dark storm clouds and the wind picked up, so I decided that as soon as I reached the park I'd head back west and try to beat the rain back to the car. As I crested the hill just before the park, I was treated to the sight of a rainbow formed by the sunlight at my back hittting the rain in the storm ahead... very cool!
Initially I thought I might end up getting wet, but the storm moved off in a different direction than I was heading, so I had a fairly pleasant ride back to the car, with a great view of the sun dropping low in the sky over the river.
