3 Mile Walk on the Albany County Rail Trail
Monday, February 17, 2020

Lots of ice on the trail, and I was there late enough that some of the bare stretches of pavement were freezing over with a very thin sheen of ice - fun. The most surprising thing was being passed by 5 people on bikes, and none of them were on fat bikes - I would have considered much of the trail too treacherous for anything other than 4" tires (well, maybe studded mountain bike tires would be OK.)

One of the things I noticed was that I didn't start until 4:30, and the sun was just going down an hour later when I wrapped up... not that long ago it would have been dark when I started. Longer hours of daylight make me happy.

I also came home to the news that tomorrow's race at Gore is postponed for a week, which also makes me happy. I was going to try to get there, but even if I'd made it, it wasn't going to be pretty, after being sick since last Wednesday. Now tomorrow evening can be a little more relaxed.

A VERY SHORT RIDE
5.4 Mile Ride on the Mohawk Hudson Bike Path
Wednesday, February 12, 2020

I ordinarily wouldn't do such a short ride - it probably took me longer to drive to the path and back than I spent on the bike - but the stretch of path between the Colonie line and the Lions Park in Niskayuna had enough stretches of ice that I was going to have to walk the bike a lot both ways, and between that and (I suspect) the throat bug I woke up with today, I couldn't muster any enthusiasm for continuing to ride.

And I suppose a short ride is better than no ride at all.

DO BETTER 2020 - Race #10
Camp Saratoga 8k Snowshoe Race
Saturday, February 8, 2020

Earlier this week RD Laura was really hoping for snow for this race, even after finding enough snow on the trails when they did the preliminary course marking on Wednesday. The good news is, we did get more snow at the end of the week. The bad news is, it was preceded by ice and accompanied by extremely high winds, which brought down trees and limbs all over the place. Yesterday when they went out to finish marking the course they found many of the trails blocked, and this morning there was no electricity in the cabin or restrooms (which meant the restrooms weren't usable - good thing they didn't remove the outhouses when they built the modern facilities a few years ago!) The course had to be modified to only use the trails closest to the cabin - essentially a 0.85 mile loop with a separate leg to start the race and a short leg to the finish - so we ended up going around that loop multiple times to make the distance work. No question that the Saratoga Stryders know how to make lemonade when they're handed a bunch of lemons!

I'll be curious to see the results because I think there was some confusion as to how many loops to run - I was convinced Matt called for 5 loops total (which I did, and ended up with a final distance of 5.1 miles, pretty amazingly close to an 8k) but I also think many of the runners (and possibly the course marshalls) thought they were supposed to do 4 loops (which would give 4.3 miles.) Not that it really matters all that much - I needed the distance, and would have gone back out on some of the other trails afterwards if my legs hadn't still been tired from Thursday's run.

One thing I really regret is leaving my cameras at home, because the scenery was gorgeous - much of the time bright and sunny and everything coated with snow.

Next up should be Tuesday at Gore, and then the very intimidating Frigus 15k next Saturday - I think I need to plan to hike most of that and conserve energy if I'm going to have any hope of finishing, between the distance (9-10 miles) and elevation change.

7.4 Mile Run on the Albany County Rail Trail
Thursday, February 6, 2020

I had originally planned to run on the rail trail yesterday after work but was too tired. Having the day off today (everything had a layer of ice-covered snow on it this morning) meant I was able to go today, albeit under very different conditions. The path was covered with about an inch of snow with a layer of ice on top... definitely harder work than yesterday would have been! It was also a grey day with very light misty rain.

But it was also in its own way quite beautiful. Plus I could see tracks from deer and turkeys crossing the path (and spotted two turkeys doing just that on my way back) and I saw quite a few squirrels and birds. And between the weather and the time of day - very few people. So maybe I lucked out that I wasn't able to run yesterday.

SUNSHINE & MID-40's!
14.4 Mile Ride on the Mohawk Hudson Bike Path
Monday, February 3, 2020

A 14 mile ride when you're riding a couple of times a week - no big deal.

A 14 mile ride when you've ridden a couple of times a month for the last three months, with half the ride heading into a stiff breeze... ow.

But then again, how many days in February are likely to have temperatures in the mid-40's, partial sunshine, and the bike path mostly clear of snow and ice (at least between SCCC and Rotterdam Junction)?
