WINTER COMES FAR TOO EARLY...
1.8 Mile Walk Around the Pine Hills Neighborhood
Thursday, November 15, 2018

First it was cold temperatures, then a storm that dropped a little snow and a bunch of ice... but tonight we've got the first real snowstorm of the 2018-19 winter season. And it's already caused the Mohonk Preserve to pull the plug on this year's After the Leaves Have Fallen Half Marathon (which is usually held a week earlier at Minnewaska State Park, but was moved due to construction there this fall.) Now it just remains to be seen if it will be enough to get us a day off from school tomorrow...

12.4 Mile Ride on the Mohawk Hudson Bike Path
Monday, November 12, 2018

Yes, my legs are beat from this weekend. But chances to ride in the daylight will be few and far between from now until March, and it was a gorgeous sunny morning for my entire drive back to Albany.

Unfortunately, the sky clouded over as I was eating lunch... but it was still a decent ride, all things considered. And I even saw several cormorants and three herons.

A GOOD NIGHT FOR A RIDE!
19.8 Mile Ride on the Mohawk Hudson Bike Path
Friday, November 2, 2018

I had originally planned to run after work, but 60+ degree nights are few and far between in November, so I made the decision to take the bike out instead. And it turned out to be a really nice night for a ride, despite over half of it being after dark.

The warm air over the cold Mohawk River formed big clouds of fog over the river and over the Old Erie Canal in Rotterdam Junction... pretty darn cool.

Riding felt good enough that once I got back to the park I even did a 2nd trip out to Scrafford Lane and back... and the timing was perfect, since the rain kicked in just as I was getting back to the car for the last time.

The return to standard time on Sunday morning means this was likely the last time for a while that I'll be riding after work with any daylight to spare - so I'm glad I was able to take advantage of the opportunity.

Thursday, November 1, 2018

Too exhausted for a run tonight ðŸ˜ž but I did manage to do a quick walk around the pond after running an errand. I really wish I'd planned ahead and brought a camera - despite it being a grey evening, the maples near the pond are all golden and I could have gotten some nice pictures. By the time I get back there many of the leaves will probably be on the ground.

The birds were also especially active, maybe because the weather was a little warmer. I even caught a couple of glimpses of the kingfisher.

Friday, October 26, 2018

This morning would have been perfect weather for a fall ride. Chilly but sunny. By afternoon a lot of the sun had disappeared behind clouds, so it was colder - but still a decent day for a ride. Between the time of day and the weather traffic on the path was sparse, which is always a plus.

GOING THE REBUILDING DISTANCE 2018 - Race #44
Hairy Gorilla Half Marathon Trail Race
Sunday, October 21, 2018

Because who am I kidding? What I thought was going to be a year where I maintained and extended the distances I was running - hasn't been. The good news is, I've run enough half's that I can finish one even when I'm really not in shape for the distance. But it isn't pretty and the recovery afterwards isn't especially fun.

It's never really clear what HGH will throw at us. One year we had so much snow that the park required the race to be cancelled, and there have been others where it was a perfect fall morning. The main thing I'll remember about this year is the wind and the cold. The temperatures weren't anything especially traumatic - right around 40 degrees at the start - but the windchill was brutal, and the temperature actually dropped while we were running.

But, thanks to the 45 minute early start I was given (thanks guys you're the best!) I was able to officially finish the entire race... with my slowest time yet, but I did finish.

I do miss the older courses, though... one of the things I enjoyed the most about this race is that it followed trails that aren't used in any other races at Thacher, and only had a couple of short stretches where we ran back on the same trail we ran out on. The current course is essentially two lollipops, with a lot of overlap with the Indian Ladder 15k, and I miss running on the trails we no longer use. I still visit them on my own - but it would also be nice to still have that variety during the race too.

SOMETIMES IT'S THE LITTLE THINGS...
Saturday, October 20, 2018

... like finding out this afternoon that I can have a 45 minute early start for the Hairy Gorilla Trail Half Marathon tomorrow morning.

The last time I ran this race, I darn near killed myself to make the time cutoff at the 5.75 mi mark, and then was dragging for the remaining 7.5 miles. This time I should have plenty of time and might even manage a more consistent pace.

Happy, happy, happy!

DEFINITELY FALL...
30.4 Mile Ride on the Mohawk Hudson Bike Path, the Erie Canalway Trail, the Mohawk Valley Gateway Overlook, & Through Riverlink Park
Sunday, October 14, 2018

I had been planning to either head to Monroe State Forest to run the Monroe Dunbar Brook course or to South Egremont to run the AT between there and Sheffield. Unfortunately today was expected to be the best (and most importantly, warmest) weather for the next week, so I ditched that plan and decided to put in miles on the bike instead.

The new section of trail between Pattersonville and Amsterdam was just as sweet now that it's officially open. I briefly thought about how cool it would be to go all the way to Fort Hunter but then did the math in my head - no way I have a 44 mile ride in my legs at this time (and probably not until after spring 2019, since we're heading into that part of the year where it is increasingly difficult to do longer rides.) But I did get to the Mohawk Valley Gateway Overlook park & Riverlink park before heading back east.

6.1 Mile Run Through Saratoga Spa State Park
Friday, October 12, 2018

Stopped at Saratoga Bridges this afternoon to pick up my race packet and took the opportunity to head over to the park for some easy running on mostly the 5 Mile Loop trails. Wonderful fall weather, one of my favorite times of the year to run. Lots of people out and about in the park, especially XC teams getting ready for tomorrow's big meet.

For some reason my Garmin wouldn't pick up the satellites for quite a while - I was about 1.4 miles in before it started working as more than just a watch. So that's missing from the map of today's route - climbing Ferndell and looping through the woods on top of the ridge before heading back down on the trail along the SPAC fenceline and past the geyser and environmental education center before crossing the creek on the 1st footbridge.

Tomorrow it's back to the park for a 10k entirely on roads and paved paths.

15 Mile Ride on the Albany County Rail Trail
Wednesday, October 10, 2018

Tons of traffic on the rail trail tonight, including multiple bikes with annoying ultra-bright lights - why these people think they need a freakin' spotlight to ride at dusk is beyond me, and it makes it very difficult to ride toward them because you end up blinded by their light as you get close enough to go by them.

Looks like it's going to be a little bit more challenging to access the trail for the next month - there's a sign up indicating there's going to be construction at the Slingerlands parking lot. At a guess they're going to pave it.

STRANGE AND BIZARRE... IN A GOOD WAY
Monday, October 8, 2018

I moved to my current apartment just about 19 years ago, and for much of that time I did my laundry at the Playdium Laudromat just two blocks away, next to the somewhat historic Playdium Bowling Center. The place was big, clean, and if I picked my times to go there carefully (weekday mornings were best) I could use as many washers and dryers as I wanted, which was handy since I'd wait a couple of months and do a huge laundry run (supplemented when I visit Rochester by Ann's washer and dryer, where I would do a bag or two of laundry per visit.)

Except when I went by there late this spring, there were signs up saying the place was closed. And a little while later I found out that the property had been sold to a developer to build a trio of fancy apartment buildings along with some commercial space. (More info can be found here.)

I tried one other local laundromat over the summer but wasn't thrilled with the results, so I'd been planning to check out a few others. Then for some reason Facebook gave me an ad for an "apartment sized" washer-dryer combo that someone was selling. I actually have the hookups down in my dungeon of a basement but couldn't see any way to get the actual appliances down the very narrow stairs, which conveniently have a 90 degree turn halfway down (as an example, I've found that it's easier to take the wheels off my fat bike when I bring it upstairs for the winter and downstairs for the spring, summer, and fall - and even then it's very difficult to get the frame up and down the steps.) But a few weeks ago curiosity got the better of me again, and I did a little searching and discovered that there are some very reasonably priced small washers and dryers out there. And for approximately the same cost as my most recent pair of glasses, I now have a washer and dryer in the basement after 30 years of mainly using laundromats.

It's very strange after all these years to walk down to the basement and put clothes in a washer and dryer... but it's a good strange, and I'm really looking forward to not spending 2-3 hours in a laundromat every few months, now that I can easily do the same chore a couple of times a week.

I really wasn't sure how today's ride would go, since I've been sick for the last two days and spent a good part of yesterday in bed. That meant I had to remind myself that I wasn't riding for speed today, but then again I haven't ridden for a week so it wasn't too difficult to take it easy.

I do find it mind-boggling that a week ago the weather was sweltering and today I actually wore a long-sleeved shirt under my bike jersey (and was glad I had for most of the ride.)

All in all it was pretty sweet to be out riding on a cool sunny day.

Mending Fences
Saturday, September 15, 2018

For some reason, the top horizontal support beams for the fence that separates my backyard from the neighbors' tends to rot away right near the fence posts. As a result I've had one section that seemed ready to fall down for quite some time (I'm actually surprised all the squirrel activity didn't take it out) and another two sections that were in better shape but would likely need replacing by the end of next summer. I don't have any easy way to get an 8 ft x 6 ft section of stockade fence from the store to the house (though I suppose I could have them deliver it) but fortunately the handyman that my landlord hires does, so last week he brought two sections over and between Thursday evening and tonight after I got back from the Mohawk Valley, I took down the old sections and installed the new ones (or in the case of a short section, cut a section out of one of the old ones to take its place.)

I still need to dismantle the old sections so I can toss the trash and salvage any useable slats, but I can take my time doing that, as long as I get it done before winter.

And for those who wonder - yes I did leave a hole for the skunks, opossum, and raccoons to squeeze through. I imagine they'll be a bit miffed at first - I think the opossum and the raccoons were using a sizeable gap in one of the sections I replaced - but I think they'll eventually figure out that there's still a spot where they can get in and out. Unfortunately that means I can't block those to keep the cats out, but I don't know that I was managing to do that anyway.

JMH
END-TO-END-TO-END, Year 3:
18.7 Mile Ride on Rt 5S & the Canalway Trail  (Little Falls to Ilion)
11.7 Mile Ride on Rt 5 (Lock 19 to Ilion)
Saturday, September 15, 2018

I think one of the things that makes is harder to be excited about riding some of the remaining sections of the canalway trail is the fact that the stretches near Syracuse and Utica are mainly on-road, which means the scenery tends to be less interesting and I get to deal with car and truck traffic.

I planned today's trip specifically around riding between Little Falls and Utica. The day was originally going to start with a race on the short off-road section of trail between the German Flatts Historical Society and Mohawk, but after a fairly exhausting week I decided to sleep a little later rather than run a 5k (a distance which I have been running much more often, but which I still don't particularly enjoy given how slow I am and how long it takes me to warm up. I had actually planned to get there over an hour early today to run about 3 miles before the race so that I'd be close to warmed up during the event itself.)

I started the first ride today riding that section of off-road trail down into Mohawk before following the roads over to Ilion and crossing the river, where I turned back. Rode back to the car, refilled my water bottles anticipating little shade for the rest of the ride, and after walking the bike through the Living History Festival at the Historical Society (which looked to be a civil war encampment re-enactment combined with a small fall festival) followed the roads all the way over to the trailhead on Rte 167 where I had stopped a little over a year ago.

After grabbing some lunch I headed west to Lock 19. Some of the locks have really nice parks on their grounds... while this one had a very nice sign out by the road proclaiming it Schuyler's Lock 19, it was pretty clear it sees mainly boat traffic, and anyone travelling the canal by boat who wanted to stop for the night would likely put in at one of the marinas (like the Ilion Marina where I stopped to use the bathroom.)

From there it was a hot slog east along Rt 5 to where I'd stopped earlier, and then a similar slog back to Lock 19, with cars and trucks zooming by me at 55-60 mph. The trip back was a little easier than the trip out mainly because I had a tailwind. Earlier in the day I had wondered if I would have enough juice to finish this section today (it's about 6.5 miles from Lock 19 to the Canalway Trail parking lot in Utica) but it was very clear that I didn't have another 13 miles in my legs, so when I got back to the lock I called it a day. (There's a possibility I'll ride that last 13 miles next weekend, if I head out to Utica to the Falling Leaves road race on Sunday... I'm still undecided if I want to run that or stay closer to home.)

On the way home I got off the Thruway between Amsterdam and Schenectady, both to treat myself to some ice cream at Stewarts and to check on the progress on the new section of trail east of Amsterdam. It's looking pretty darn close to being finished - they've got gates installed at the various access points - but the signs still say it isn't open yet.

It looks like there's construction going on for a new section of trail between the German Flatts Historical Society and Lock 18 to the east, but it also looks like they still have a lot to do, and it doesn't seem like that can add more than 2-3 miles of offroad trail. There's a pretty obvious overgrown railbed on Rt 167 across from the current trailhead, but it's very unclear if they plan to run the trail through there. I know what I read most recently is that they're planning to do more modifications to the road-side route in that area to make it more bicycle and family friendly - apparently between bridges that would need to be built and land that would need to be purchased, on-road is simply a much more viable option.

HORRIBLE WEATHER 😞
6 Mile Run at Peebles Island State Park, Waterford Harbor, & Along the Old Champlain Canalway Trail
Monday, September 3, 2018

After almost a week of cooler weather, the hot & humid stuff is back with a vengeance. The only consolation is that it's supposed to cool off a bit for the first actual day of school at the end of the week.

As a result, today's run was both shorter and slower than I had planned on. Only one loop around Peebles Island (I had planned on two) and I totally gave up on the canal path heading north. I suspect I'm also going to give up on a short ride later this evening. On the other hand, I'm glad I had planned to run the canal path, because it's fairly flat and mostly shaded.

27.2 Mile Ride on the Mohawk Hudson Bike Path, Rt 5S, and the (Future) Erie Canalway Trail
Sunday, September 2, 2018

"Future" because technically the almost 4 mile stretch of paved trail I rode from Pattersonville to Lock 10 isn't open yet, but I couldn't resist riding some new pavement (late on a Sunday afternoon when I was pretty sure none of the workers would be there!) The new stretch of trail is pretty sweet - only a slight grade, as opposed to the hills on Rt 5S, and mostly secluded. There's a really nice stretch through a long rock cut that I especially enjoyed. This section looks like it's close to being done - there's a little work left for the parking area, and a redecked bridge that they're still working on. I'm looking forward to riding it again once it's officially open - it might also make for a nice run.

I'm curious to see what happens with the remaining connections between Pattersonville and Rotterdam Junction. I've seen a lot about tunnels under the railroad tracks, at Scrafford Lane and at the bridge carrying the rail line over 5S on the western end of the Junction. And the discussions this year all seemed focused on the money actually being there to build these tunnels, thanks to Cuomo's push to get the Empire State Trail built (the same push is funding the construction to close gaps, like the section I rode today.) But this is an election year for the governor, and I think we all know elections can totally upend plans like these. (I had previously heard that money had been set aside years ago for the tunnel at Scafford Lane but then that money disappeared at around the same time that the rail line owners got into a fight with the state that killed any plans that were in place.)

One of the reasons I like to ride the Rotterdam Junction sections of the bike path is the abundant wildlife in the old canal - today did not disappoint. A lot of the water in the section on the east side is clogged with green algae, but I still saw a heron, wood ducks, a few turtles basking, and two muskrats. I also spotted what looks like a large dead snapping turtle. The section on the west side was surprisingly low on water but nonetheless had five herons (migrating, maybe?) and several kingfishers, as well as numerous turtles. And I once again saw an osprey fly overhead.

END-TO-END-TO-END, YEAR 3:
25.4 Mile Ride At Onondaga Lake Park, The Old Erie Canal Trail (Camillus), & A Few Roads In Between
Tuesday, August 28, 2018

OK, I'm embarrassed to admit this is the first time this year I've added to my Erie Canalway Trail end-to-end-to-end mileage... and I only added 8.1 miles (one way) at that. I had planned to get in a bunch of miles out near Buffalo earlier in the month, but that fell through... now I'm hoping to complete the Camillus-DeWitt and Utica-Little Falls stretches this year (because both are relatively close to home) and the project has become a 4 year plan.

Unfortunately, the sections mentioned above are mostly on-road which means they are some of the least enjoyable parts of the Canalway Trail. Not to mention the hills - the Canalway Trail tends to be fairly flat, the road connectors not-so-much.

On the plus side, while I didn't add much mileage today, I did get to ride the Western Shoreline Trail extension all the way to the end (previously, the gate to the new concert venue was always closed when I got there) and riding a bike is much more pleasant than running when the weather is as hot and humid as what we're experiencing at the moment.

(NOT) GOING THE DISTANCE 2018 - Race #39
A Midsummer Nights Madness Trail Half Marathon
(DNF after 7.7mi, 2 hr 24 min)
Saturday, August 25, 2018

Very disappointed... I finished this one last year after running a 5k in the morning, and under conditions which I thought were less pleasant (I distinctly remember not having enough water for the last leg.) But this year I was feeling tired going in (despite taking it easy instead of running a race in the morning) and during the very tough 2nd leg it was clear my get-up-and-go had gotten up and gone somewhere else, and if I managed to finish the last leg I would end up walking the whole thing. So I took the easy way out and bailed after the 2nd leg, which I hate doing (even though it was probably the right decision, given how I was feeling.)
