As I continue to read through Joe Henderson's Run Right Now I keep being struck by how much the ideas and philosophy echo my own... especially when Joe relates the words and wisdom of the great runner-philosopher George Sheehan. Here's what Sheehan defined as "winning" -
- do the best you can within the limits of your current abilities
- keep on doing it as long as you can
- don't apologize for whatever you've done
I find this personally appealing because I will most likely never be first or even place in the top three in my age group - indeed, in many races I'm lucky if I'm not the last person to cross the finish line - which leads some folks to wonder why I spend the time on money on going to races. But this is the answer to that - races push me to give it my best, and if I do that when it's all over I feel good, regardless of my time or what place I come in.
