KMYABIGN ENDS WITH A WHIMPER INSTEAD OF A BANG...
No 300k November For Me 😢
Sunday, November 24, 2024
I was supposed to run the Upstate Classic Half this morning... but when I woke up I was feeling "off", and the Classic is a big loop so I was worried about getting part of the way around the course and then finding out I wasn't able to finish - it's easier on an out-and-back, where you can just turn around early and head back.
Without today's miles it would take a insane effort to complete 300k by midnight Saturday... under the circumstances it just doesn't make sense. I'll still accumulate what miles I can, but I'm going to have to settle for less than 300k for this year's Raven Rocks challenge.
I'm going to try to do a "reset" in December, to hopefully wrap up the year more productively than the last 5-6 months have been and head into 2025 with a little momentum. But nothing as strenuous as 300k in 30 days.

LOOKING LIKE A TOUGH FINISH TO KMABIGN
94.4 Miles to Go... In 10 Days...
Tuesday, November 19, 2024
I started this challenge (the 300k Raven Rocks Challenge) strong... but then things went a bit off the rails in the middle of the month. So much for kicking my ass back into gear...
10 days, 94.4 miles, an average of 9.5 miles per day.
I think it's possible but it's going to hurt.
If I can manage at least 25 miles during the weekend of 11/23-24, and another 25 miles for two days over my Thanksgiving "break"... that leaves "only"46 miles over the remaining 7 days... an average of 6.6mi a day.
Honestly, it's insane. But so was running a marathon when I'd never really run before, way back in 1997. For that matter, hitting 300k during the 1st Raven Rocks Challenge in 2020 was nuts - I only decided it was possible with 7 days and 90k to go.
Slow and steady won't win a race... but it might get me to 300k by midnight 11/30. That and legs that are going to be really freakin' tired when December gets here.

NO EXCUSE NOVEMBER? NAH... HOW ABOUT
KICK MY ASS BACK INTO GEAR NOVEMBER!
WELCOME TO THE 2024 RAVEN CHALLENGE
Friday, November 1, 2024
This year started out OK and I made decent progress at one of my goals, running at least one live half marathon race each month... until March, when the wheels started to come off my training. And it went downhill from there, especially once June hit and a family medical situation added a bit of additional stress to my life... followed by a bout of covid, and getting hit by a car, and numerous other smaller obstacles. As a result, I've run, walked, and biked the least mileage that I've done in years, and I've been finding it very, very frustrating.
In 2020 as a result of the Raven Rocks 10k being cancelled (covid again) the organizers set up a month long Raven Challenge, in which participants could complete a variety of activities toward "badges" attached to the finisher medal. The primary challenge was to complete 100k in 30 days, but that also extended up to 300k - and I was very surprised to find that as I approached the last week or so, hitting 300k was doable - if I was willing to run and walk 90k more. Somehow I managed to do that (having 5 days off for Thanksgiving certainly helped) - and I've done 300k in every Raven Challenge since. (Actually, in a couple of cases I did 300k during the months before November too... which might explain why I was pretty tired come December...)
So starting today, I have 300k (186mi) to cover over the next 30 days. An average of 6.2 miles per day. And hopefully by doing so I'll get myself back on track.
Let the fun begin...

DRAGONS REIGN!
1.4 Mile Walk at the Rosamund Gifford Zoo
Saturday, September 14, 2024
When Ann and I were at the Syracuse zoo for the Zoo Run Run 5k run and walk back in April, we noticed several nests that had large eggs in them... later we learned that in May the eggs would "hatch" and be replaced by a series of dragons which would remain at the zoo until October. Summer came and went and we didn't manage to get there to see the dragons - but this weekend she was planning to come over to this side of the state for a college friend's birthday celebration, so I drove out to Syracuse to meet her and we visted the zoo and the dragons before getting lunch and heading east.
The dragons were from a variety of cultures and had varying degrees of animation and sound. There were also two real-world creatures - a dragonfly and a komodo dragon - included in the mix. Unfortunately, we missed one dragon (the manticore) which was apparently in a more off-the-beaten path location than the others - we didn't find that out until we were ready to leave, and at that point we were tired and hungry enough that we didn't want to go back.
