THE BIRDS & THE BATS
A Short Walk Along the Erie Canal
Thursday, July 3, 2008
Finally got out to Rochester late in the evening, after spending far too much of the day getting things ready and then driving through holiday traffic (originally I'd hoped to leave in the morning and miss the latter.) So once I got the car unpacked Ann and I headed up to Greece for a short walk along the canal as the sun went down.
Bugs, bugs, bugs... far too many despite the temperatures being somewhat cool. We watched a flock of cedar waxwings swooping around catching bugs... and then as it got darker watched several bats zipping all over catching even more. All I can say is - go guys go! Any critter that eats biting insects in OK in my book, and the waxwings and the bats are downright cool.
We also spent a few minutes trying to sneak up on a heron who had walked out onto the path... finally he flew across the canal and walked along the rough path there.
